Use of trim on radio?

I have picked up a used ArduCopter and have managed to get it to the point of test flying it so far in my living room.  I get it to lift off and it always goes forward and right so compensation is needed to keep it level. It is in stabilize mode when doing this, my question is is it acceptable to make adjustment using the radios trim or even setting some trim for the pitch and roll control in the radio?

I have leveled the copter 3 times and it is level. Also i would like to have the controls set to a level that is not to aggressive and would make for an easy flyer.  Can expo be used on the radio or are there some setups that can be used in mission planner.

Any help would be appreciated

  • Expo can certainly be used, along with dual rates. I have my tricopter setup that way.

I also use transmitter trims a bit, though I do try to get it leveled out with the configuration software first. I use the tx trims mostly to counter for wind a bit when I am doing aerial photography stuff so that I'm feeding in less corrections manually and the copter is doing a better job of auto-holding.

If you find that you are constantly drifting forward and right, try sticking a penny under the landing skids on those two axis's and re-level with the config software. That might help it to be more level without using tx trims.

  • the auto level feature is a really nice feature, and easy to use

Use the auto-leveling feature to fine tune the leveling while in the air and not the radio trims. It will cause less grief later. There are many gotchas when you adjust the trims too much.
