Using different brand ESC's

Hello,

My project group and I have been having an issue with one ESC getting hotter than the others.  We moved ESCs around so that it was powering a different motor, and the same ESC was getting hot.  This is also the ESC that has twice ceased to power the motor and caused a crash.  We suspect that the ESC is over heating and shutting down because of that.

We are using the m2mPower 20A ESC's that were available on the diydrones store.  Those are currently out of stock.

My questions are:

What is the advisability of just replacing that one ESC with a similar one I can purchase from the local hobby store?

What else might be causing the ESC to get hotter than the others and/or cut out after prolonged flight?

Thanks,

Alec.

  • I've had a faulty jDrones ESC and couldn't wait for a replacement to arrive (which was pretty fast, but what can i say, i'm a very impatient guy when it comes to my toys ;).

Anyways, i've replaced two jDrones 20A ESCs (one faulty, one not, to keep things symmetrical) with two Hobby Wing Pentium 30A ESCs. Apart from ear-tearing "music" that combo creates on power-up, seems to have been working good so far.
  • I am interested in this question as well. I received a bad ESC from jDrones (they shipped a new one right away, but it takes two weeks to get here) and replaced it with one I bought locally (Florida, U.S.). My local ESC does not calibrate like the jDrones ESCs (the beeps are different). On my first test flight (hanging from the ceiling with fishing line) I experienced uncontrollable yaw. I mean, it spins like a top. I've never had successful flight, but I don't know if I should spend a lot of time troubleshooting, or just wait for the replacement ESC. Advice one way or the other would be highly appreciated.

Forgot to mention, arducopter frame from jDrones, electronics from DiyDrones, arducopterNG (rev 2.01 on the #define line, not sure where you guys get version numbers from)

nobody has tested that yet it should work theoretical (better when you replace 2 ESC to keep it symetrical)
