Would anyone else prefer to have the website chat applet visible by default as a sidebar? I noticed that it was recently added as a bar, hidden by default, at the bottom of the page, but even when there are 100+ people online as it is now, the chances of receiving a quick reply (within a few minutes) are slim.
I feel that if more people were aware of the chat feature and had constant visibility of its activity (of course with the ability to still hide it if desired) that collaboration and productivity would be much higher!
It's so frustrating to have a simple question that I'm sure a good portion of people currently on the site would be happy to quickly answer, only to be forced to bury it into one of the forum posts and have to wait hours or days for a reply.

Permalink Reply by Jake Stew on April 30, 2012 at 3:57pm This site already wastes more screen space than anything I've ever really used before. Since it's already borderline unusable.. No, I don't think another screen waster which would diminish the already marginal functionality of the forums is needed.
Permalink Reply by Dom on April 30, 2012 at 5:11pm Unless you're reading on your phone, I don't see how your argument works? On My small 15" screen with a modest 1400x1250 resolution, I still have 2" of free space on either side of the content!
And anyway, my suggestion was only to have the chat visible by default, with the ability to still hide it if desired. In this way, everyone would be aware of the chat function which would start off a good amount of discussions, and those who choose not to use the chat function can still hide it.
I had to wait eight days for a reply to this thread which only proves my initial point of simple discussions being buried in the forums. Highly categorized forums are great for archival purposes, and I think that popular topics should still be implemented in a thread form, but for more generalized communication and development, a quicker and more widely used method of communication such as the chat function is needed.

Permalink Reply by Dom on April 30, 2012 at 6:28pm That's my point. At any given time there are lots of people on the website, but very few have the chat page open, so discussions started don't get any views.
If the chat were defaulted to be visible as a sidebar, I think it would be much more useful!
Permalink Reply by Gabriel on May 1, 2012 at 3:35am so has chat been completely canned ? it wasn't a overly used feature came in handy once or twice.
there is way to many categories on this site for me you have tags use them ! 3DRradios could of stayed in the wireless section etc...
Permalink Reply by Helldesk on May 8, 2012 at 12:21am What happened to the chat anyway? I used to keep http://diydrones.com/chat/index/popOutWindow open in a browser page of its own and used it too. It's a missed opportunity! With some better method of promotion it could have been quite useful. Did it cause technical problems or something?
