Why is 250 the most common racing frame size?

250 appears to be the standard but why is this exactly? What are the cons to say a 220 or 270?

I am considering buying a 220 (I already have a 250) for the power to weight ratio and assumed agility, at the expense of carrying less weight and possible bother in high winds and not being able to fly in races. But there must be a good reason to go 250 (other than getting spares easier) that I am ignorant of.
