Worldwide Control

I am looking to pilot a semi-autonomous system from just under 9,000 km away. (That's over 5,000 miles.)

At this distance the curvature of the earth is somewhat in the way.

I am curious as to the existing solutions for worldwide coverage for controlling a lightweight system for static, not real time imagery, GPS and altitude reporting and location targeting.

I require the ability to contact at least the entirety of Europe and Asia, where a consistent 10 kb/s connection would be prefered over a spotty 100 kb/s connection. Normal data packets will be sent once a minute and be approximately 10-25 kb in size. Images will be much more but can be retrieved on request over a period of time.

I would prefer worldwide, or at least northern Africa coverage as well, with faster speeds specifically across central and eastern Asia. As before, reliability trumps speed every time.

I'm going to file this under wireless communications but have no problem with the discussion being moved to a more relevant category if one is available.
