Hi to all.
I am trying to setup my for long unused  Ardupilot + Shield according to the info on the first page of this thread but i am having a problem.

I started as proposed using only the Ardupilot board with the Control (ch 5) connected only.
Did everything as per tutorial but can't get the Sat LED blinking before the GPS Emulator step.
The only way to get a Sat blinking is by entering

#define GCS_PROTOCOL -1
any other option like the
#define GCS_PROTOCOL 0 which is by default there wont make my Sat LED blink.
If now i go on the next step (GPS Emulator) with
#define GCS_PROTOCOL -1
Then i don't get a Sat Lock.
Please help because the tutorial doesn't state what to do if someone has a problem like mine.

Hum!

My locosys (LS20023) is powered with 5V through 1 diode (connected to the osd, IIRC with two diodes the osd did't fix ), the MTK gps unit  is working with the 5V supplied by the Ap board

Try to connect directly the gps to the Ap board using the GND-5V_out-Tx0-RxI terminals in the Ap pcb board and see if this helps.

Check Tx0 and RxI lines are well connected.

I just read the Locosys ls20033 datasheet and saw that thw Vin max is 4.2V

but at the same time the pin6 is a backup voltage in rated up to 6V.

Any idea why there is such diference?

Should i connect the 5V fron the Ardu to Pin6 of the GPS ?

I see yours pass thru a diode that induces a Voltage drop also.

I will try and see.

don't forget the diode!

I connected the Vc pin to the backup pin, IIRC the unit doesn't work without the Voltage in the Vbackup pin

I have Vin and Vbackup connected together to the pin that goes to the 3V of the Ardu.

So now i will try the Vin and Vbackup connected to a diode going to the 5V pin of the Ardu.

I had to be sure and I went and check my model, after all I am using TWO(2) diodes.

I did more, measured the Vin=3.43V when the gps is powered by the osd 5V line.

You have to change something because right now the Ap board is useless.

Test the connection with 2 diodes, if it fails then remove one diode and try again.

If it fails, dump it in the trash bin.

My Ap board(s) work well with gps simulation or real gps unit, but I have my share of "lemons", boards that the Rx line become useless, others the Tx line, others the mcu.

Maybe you have a "lemon".

That's why I ask you above if you have other Ap boards to test.

I read through the posts and didn't see anything about you making an adapter cable, so if the gps works on another system using it's default connector, I'd take a close look at the made adapter.

Using other GPS modules

Note: only the MediaTek and uBlox modules are officially supported by the DIY Drones dev team. It's possible to use other modules, but we can't offer you more support than the guides below, which may or may not work on your module

You can use any GPS module in NMEA mode as long as you can set it to 38400 baud and splice on a EM406 connector. One that works very well is the Locosys 20031.

First you probably need to splice on a EM406 connector to the module so it can attach to ArduPilot. Here's a tutorial to do that.

Then you will probably have to program your module to work properly with ArduPilot. Each module has its own programming commands, which you can usually find on the manufacturer's website. Here's our guide for programming the Locosys 20031.

Finally, to use a generic GPS module in NMEA mode, set this line of the ArduPilot configuration file to 0:

//0-3
#define GPS_PROTOCOL 0 // 0 = NMEA, 1=SIRF, 2=uBlox, 3 = ArduIMU, 5 = Simulated GPS mode (Debug)

Maybe i have it all wrong, don't know what to say.

I am connecting my gps the way it is shown in the picture below on the green circled pins.

Is that correct??

I remember reading in the past some problem related with shield, gps and the led behaviour.

Don't remember if the AP was operational or not with the led problem.

Forget the shield, you don't need it to do FPV/RTL.

Stabiliztion works perfectly already.

To do RTL i need GPS.

Can you direct me to a link that show how to connect everything (That is IR sensors and GPS) and the correct Firmware so as to have Stabilization and RTL funcions?

Found it!!!

Will try without the Shield and report back.
