Hi guys!I'm Rafa, and I'm studying science at my high school. We have a great project to do: build an ArduCopter UAV. We've alredy bought some pieces, we've built the body, but, unfortunately, we're…Continue

Comment by Dr Mike Black on July 5, 2012 at 5:22pm Sorry Harry, you are 100% right( i just assumed that the process was a given, but clearly not)
Thanks for clarifying what could have been a potential nightmare for them.

P.S..congrats on convertng V3. Trimupter? what is that? Anything JL does is very cool.
Comment by Harry on July 5, 2012 at 4:38pm I'd like to add when you remove a tab, do a verify to see how it might have affected things. If you take too much out at once, it makes it hard to know exactly. I'm playing with Jean-Louis' TrIMUpter which was for IMU V2, so I've got some work to adapt it to V3 hardware. When the V3 came out, there wasnt any code and I had to figure out some stuff. I got very close, It mostly worked, but the official code was perfecto. Compiler error messages really do tell you what's wrong.
Comment by Dr Mike Black on July 5, 2012 at 3:51pm Hi guys,
Anwar it sounds as though you have it sorted now...well done. You can at least progress now..
Brian, thanks for the kind words, yeah she is rock steady now.
Ok, regarding slimming down...
whn you open the PDE, you will see tabs like MTK, UBLOX, SIM..
basically you need to remove the ones you are NOT using..for example, i use ublos GPS, so you dont need to keep the MTK, SIM files, so what i do is create a copy of the complete code, then work with that, to remove the files you dont need...
Go into the folder of the AP, and delete the file marked MTK, then SIM..
Also depending on what GCS you use, remove the file with the other GCS in..i use the Labview one (my own updated version) so i remove the 'Jason' file..etc..if you see what i mean..when you open the AP PDE next time these files are no longer showing...therefore the file size is less..
In a personal note...my AP code is sorted..3.5mile round trip done yesterday...no faults...
Flew from my field to our lakes...then across to work, did a couple of circuits there then came home to me,
See vid..below...
Also...if you are interested i have many 328 boards (new, unmade) if you want, stop mucking about with the 168, and i will send you a 328...give you a fighting chance..let me know?!
Also gotyour email, not had a chance to reply yet..but the Wing is nearly there, almost ready to post renderings.
Anyway, your thoughts are appreciated.
Kind regards,
Mike.,
Comment by Anwar Ali Khan on July 4, 2012 at 11:37pm A bit more learning, if I don't get a lock with the same previous setting with which I could get it, I take the GPS to SiRFDemo, Synchronize Protocol & Baud Rate, Switch to the desigred Protocol (NMEA in my case), and then bring it back to the ArduPilot and get the lock instantly.

Mike, the video looks great and does inspire me to get off my behind and get going. You can see the wind when you landed but the video did not seem to show the plane being knocked around, what platform you flying again?
Regarding slimming the code down so that an IMU can be used on one of the 168 boards... I've never done any of that and just wondering which code to start with... The latest? then just start chopping away? I think I'll start that way and if it's wrong version hopefully somebody will stop me!
Thanks for the recent posts... Happy flying
Comment by Dr Mike Black on July 2, 2012 at 1:54pm Hi Guys,
Anwar, sorry it occured to me that, i was talking about baud rates from the wrong end....
If your EM406 is set to sirf 57600 is the output rate of the data from AP to radio telem..
NMEA is 9600
ublox is 38400
so you had it right, i told you to set it wrong! (been so long since i had to play with teh data rates) my apologies...
@ Brian, if i recal yes, the 168 cannot handle the memory needed...(mind you, you can slim it down, if you are not using other GPS or sim modes)
@ Harry, i wired up the IMU V3 today...but not actually got to test it..but the data, looks right in binary mode, in asci mode it all make sence....so it looks good so far...
For those struggling.....a little inspiration...
this is my flight from yesterday...8WP's 20-25 knot winds....
Tracked all well and came home (2 flights, switched to manual in the middle) brought it down to about 6 foot and re-engaged Auto, as you can see around the middle of the vid, it just climbed away and did its stuff!
Very happy indeed....BUT again...its the GPS..once the ALT stablized...all was good!
Thoughts?

Comment by Anwar Ali Khan on July 2, 2012 at 7:15am @all, some good news: finally I got the GPS lock indication via the blue LED on AP. But the blue LED starts blinking only in mode 2 or 3 of the toggle switch, never in mode 1 (manual mode). It indicates lock only after two or three blinks. This was possible in NMEA mode with 9600 baud rate. The SIRFDemo assigns baud rate 9600 to the GPS in NMEA mode. So I tried with 9600 and it was done. But having this all in a car and moving on a road with four GPS points in a square shape (about 100 apart from each other) and putting toggle switch mode in AUTO I could not see any servo movements. Please someone tell me how should I check it in a car until I get an electric plane (I have all planes with glow engine that I don't want to use for tests). Thanks.
@Mike, I forgot to say sorry about your GPS.
Comment by Anwar Ali Khan on July 1, 2012 at 12:27pm @all, after giving up could not wait even for a day and started on the project after evening and finally got the blue lock LED on the AP blinking. As per advice of Dr. Mike I changed the EM406 to NMEA mode. You see it is mentioned in the manual that the toggle switch should be in position 1 (manual mode) before powering the board. I forgot to do so. It was in position 3 and on powering the AP the blue LED started blinking. So in my case either with NMAE or SIRF, on powering the AP the blue LED on AP never starts blinking if the toggle switch is in position 1. It never blinks if the SIRF baud rate is set to 57600. But no fix yet. It keeps on blinking (even the LED on the GPS shows a fix in NMEA within a minute).
@Mike please tell me how can I set the baud rate of the AP (to make is same as of the GPS) as you have suggested.
Some one please also tell me how should I modify the folder GPS_NMEA.pde in the code 2.7.1 to use the EM406 as NMEA (I have done something but probably not correct).
@Brian, my AP is 328 and the procedure (along with the code) is available in the main manual to use it with IMU (I think its for V2 but V3 should also work).
@Harry, I will follow you when I get my IMU and MTK.
Thanks all.

More of a question in general. As I recall the ArduIMU v2 does not work with the older/earlier board either. Just not enough space on the 168. Please correct me if incorrect.
Comment by Harry on July 1, 2012 at 9:29am If you mean the very first Ardupilot board with the 168, then no.
