Welcome to my build thread. This is my first attempt at building a ardurover based on APM 2.5. The RC platform I am building on is an Axial SCX10 rc crawler (2012 Jeep Rubicon). The end goal I am…Continue

Niall: that was the standard 3DR Ublox6, with the regular antenna and ground plane (which is much bigger than the MTK). I haven't used the EM406 for years, but the uBlox is several generations of technology past that and has an optimized setting for ground vehicles.
Comment by Niall Dempsey on July 5, 2012 at 7:32am @Chis: you mentioned the uBlox with bigger antenna, is that the standard antenna that comes with the uBlox or is it a special one. Also, how does the MTK compare with EM406 which I have used with this project http://clikire.snappages.com/farmboz-3.htm
I found the EM406 reliable but the accuracy is only < 10m. If the uBlox can reliable perform at 30cm then that is a huge breakthrough.

@Bot: Point taken ;-) Let's just say that I had my ArduRover with the new uBlox GPS run a course 60 times on grass, where I could see the track, and it never varied by more than 30 cm over a period of 25 minutes. Maybe I just got lucky!
Consistent, reliable 30cm accuracy is nothing short of jaw-dropping, astonishing, holy freaking toledo, game changing. :D That is pro grade. The winning team, Ox27, had a Hemisphere GPS with 60cm accuracy. Cost is on the order of $1800 (it was donated to them) I've seen my own GPSs sometimes report with very good position accuracy on occasion, but invariably over many runs on many days, the distribution is around the typical 3m.

I think the new uBlox is a must-have for ArduRover. My GPS was all over the place with the MTK, probably due to multipath distortion close the ground. When I switched the uBlox, with the bigger antenna, it was rock solid. I never lost lock and the error was never more than about 30cm.
Comment by KM6VV on July 3, 2012 at 7:02pm I'd be interested in the results of the tests!
A friend is also looking into it, maybe making a PCB.

The uBlox looks good. I may have to give it a try.
I think it would be interesting to compare GPS performance by having AVC competitors post data logs on HDOP and sat count. What do you all think?
If there's interest I'll post up my Venus logs. I was getting really good signal reception from it. I've been very, very pleased with it.
Season Two of the Trust Time Trial (T3) Contest has now begun. The fourth round is an accuracy round for multicopters, which requires contestants to fly a cube. The deadline is April 14th.183 members
