Since we may be contracting 3rd party to make PCBs and supply parts for the CNC, I'd like to gauge how much real interest there is in buying one of these machines, when we're done.

Keep in mind that this is not a commitment, just think to yourself to see how serious you would be, and comment yay or nay.

Ok, just counting heads.  So far it's 17 people.  Let me know if I missed anyone.

My personal budget for this is $1000-$1200, so any higher, and I'm out, but of course would continue to do my best to get this done for everyone!

To summarize:

Servo System:

  • has rotational encoders to allow exact motor control
  • position encoders, so that tool head can be positioned precisely
  • uses DC motors
  • requires development or use of a custom circuit board to drive the motors
  • more expensive solution

Stepper System

  • no rotational encoders, so will not allow exact motor control
  • position encoders, may still be possible
  • uses stepper motors
  • no custom circuit boards needed, motor systems easily available
  • cheaper than servo system

I would be in on one as well.

Just to throw an idea out there, I wonder if it would be possible to have an "interchangeable machining head" that you could swap an extruder in as well.  

Bed and ways would all move the same...not sure if tolerances can be maintained, etc...just a thought.

Seems to me that the stepstruder mk7 would be the current entry point.  Looks like 1.75mm ABS filament would be the material of choice.

Great design ideas into a simple tool.  The heating element / housing / nozzle, temperature control, cooling and the drive block/gear seem to be the core parts.

With a controller for the stepper motor, and the right kind of temperature controller (looks like around 225F for ABS), it shouldn't be too bad.

Probably want a heated bed as well with Kapton tape.

I think designing in a heated bed would just bog us down.  The 3D printer is a "would be nice".  There's much more complexity involved with adding a heated bed.

I totally agree it's brainstorming, and a "nice to have".  Just wanted to throw it out there now!

Heated bed is for to stop the plastic from curling when working on tighter tolerances to the best of my knowledge.

generating a lot of interest is good but when we hit the "pre-order" parts moment we will really see how many can really afford it.

Dany, unlike kickstarter, all the members are asked to contribute their expertise.  This is a group effort, not some dreamer with an idea, asking people to contribute money so he can live out his dream.  We fail or succeed, together.  But, I think we have enough skilled people to be able to pull it off.

Season Two of the Trust Time Trial (T3) Contest has now begun. The fourth round is an accuracy round for multicopters, which requires contestants to fly a cube. The deadline is April 14th.
