Since we may be contracting 3rd party to make PCBs and supply parts for the CNC, I'd like to gauge how much real interest there is in buying one of these machines, when we're done.
Keep in mind that this is not a commitment, just think to yourself to see how serious you would be, and comment yay or nay.
Update June 8th, 20122:
Ok, just counting heads. So far it's 17 people. Let me know if I missed anyone.
My personal budget for this is $1000-$1200, so any higher, and I'm out, but of course would continue to do my best to get this done for everyone!
Here's a list of "yays" so far (again no commitment assumed):
Drive System Survey
Franco Scipioni has set up a survey to gauge interest in which system we want to have on the system.
Access the survey here:
Yep happy to help with that. Who's leading the design work for this? Can someone PM me to get me up to speed on where we are at and thinking to date on this if this has started.
If there is a concise description somewhere of what the group has decided to build, would someone point me at it?
Monroe, is the main design lead on the mechanical, and R. D. Starwalt is looking into the electronics side of things. I started the discussion, and the original blog about buy/building a CNC machine, and mainly organizing things for everyone.
Basically, we're relatively early in the design stage. We still have to decide on what motors and controller to use, and Monroe is working on the mechanical design. Early stages yet.
OK - so let's talk basics.
Moving gantry or moving table?
Here's what I would like to build - smaller than this say 18 by 36 working area and mist cooling not flood but basically this:
Not sitting on a cross slide - it just has a 4'th axis on the end. I had a little correspondence with the guy who built it and he will answer questions. He has unfortunately lost the drawings though.
Watch the video. 4'th axes are not generally fixed in one position - they are moved to wherever the setup requires them to be. As far as where it is in the video - everybody gotta be someplace......
I'll ask him where he got the spindle, but I think it's one of the Chinese ones available on Ebay complete with vfd - something like this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2-2KW-WATER-COOLED-SPINDLE-MOTOR-ER20-INVERT...
