My main interest in the application is for the installation of solar power systems.  I'm a solar designer and software developer based in San Jose, California, USA.  Right now we have people risking their lives climbing around on slippery roof faces measuring and photographing.  It occurred to me some time ago that someday it may be possible to do this job by drone, but I can now see that "someday" is a lot closer than I thought!

I can also see that this isn't going to be easy.  That's why I'm throwing this out there in hopes that other people may be interested in jointly developing a solution.  To be properly prepared for solar installation, we need measurements of all roof faces and obstructions accurate to one inch.  To be useful, it would have to be possible to reduce the data and make a 3D CAD model fairly quickly.

I have experience in s/w development and CAD.  Most of my software experience has been with applications, though I have limited experience with device drivers from many years ago.
