hello mr paul, is this your design? is it posible to have a cad file to make one of these 4.4 mts wingspan?
Comment by Paul Marsh on March 15, 2011 at 4:37am

Hi Diego,

Yes, this is my design.  The full scale Pioneer has a wingspan of 5150 mm, so you'd be almost at 100% scale at 4.4 meters.  I'm sure my design could be scaled up, but there would have to be structural changes, I'm sure.  I would be happy to give you my design files when I'm finished, or even now if you like.  I'm doing this in Google Sketchup.  I think the files can be converted to another CAD platform, but I don't know how to do that.

Let me know if you would like the files I have so far.  I can post them for download.

Thanks,
Paul

do yourself a favour and get rid of the godawful plank wing, even just a straight taper will give ~5% beter aerodynamic effieciency!

but nice job otherwise

Hi Hamish,

I'm sure you're right.  However, I am doing this as a scale project and I'm not all that concerned about efficiency.  When I chose the Pioneer to model, one reason was the overall simple configuration.  I appreciate your comments.

Thanks,
Paul

i really like your design, but we are thinking of making the wing with fiberglass..

Well it sure is a good replica then !

@Diego--Thanks.  Just let me know if you'd like the files.  I still have more work to do, but the design is coming along.

@Hamish--Below is a photo of the real thing.  I was very fortunate to get some detailed design info on the full scale version, so that's another reason I want to stay true to the original design.  I wish I were designing a UAV that would need endurance and efficiency, but in the end this is just for sport.  I doubt it will ever fly out of visual range (intentionally).

The SKP files look great.  How is the project coming along ?

Hi Barron,

Thank you.  The project hasn't gone past the design phase just yet.  That part got started sooner, and went a lot quicker, than I originally planned.  After another RC project I'm working on, I'll get back to this one.
