GPS Multipath Error

We have been running into an issue quite often when flying at certain altitudes and 'near' structures. We are doing autonomous waypoint navigation and all of a sudden the GPS position jumps anywhere…Continue

Magnetometer Shielding

I am sure that some of you have experienced the same issue that we have. We are flying a rather heavy hexacopter configuration which pulls a substantial amount of current just to hover. Due to the…Continue

Flight Time Optimization

Started this discussion. Last reply by Adam Kimberlin Mar 11. 4 Replies

We attempted a little parametric study to optimize our UAV's flight time using the motors, propellers, and # of batteries as our controllable variables. First we optimized the rotor/motor…Continue

"Garrick and I are both civil servants with NASA. He works in the avionics group and I work in our propulsion group. We were given a little bit of play money to go work on UAV's and we do this stuff on the side. We have other people involved…"

John Bond replied to Adam Kimberlin's discussion GPS Multipath Error
"It certainly sounds like multipath.  It can be mitigated by better antenna design and/or receiver processing which tend to add cost, size, and weight.  You don't say what you are flying or the type of GPS and antenna used (and budget)…"

"That sounds very likely. I believe that as you move the sheet, you are inducing eddy currents in the Mu-Metal. As you turn the sheet of metal, you are effectively introducing a local, time-changing magnetic field in the sheet which produces the…"

GPS Multipath Error

We have been running into an issue quite often when flying at certain altitudes and 'near' structures. We are doing autonomous waypoint navigation and all of a sudden the GPS position jumps anywhere from several feet up to a few hundred feet. Obviously this isn't cool and luckily we have enough people to notice the issue and regain manual control before it does anything too crazy. From what I have seen via some quick research, this could very easily be what is known as…See More

Adam Kimberlin commented on Chris Anderson's blog post DIY Rockets site
"I completely agree; however, I am a huge fan of 3D printing and making things open source. I work for NASA in a propulsion research lab and if there is any effort to make propulsion more accessible regardless of the scale, I am all for it."

About Me:
I am a propulsion research and development engineer for NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center. I work on a wide range of propulsion systems from large solid and liquid rocket motors to in space plasma thrusters.

My primary strengths are software development, simulation, and test. I am also involved with design and analysis of various systems.
Tell us a bit about your UAV interest
I am interested in all things UAV related. I have a pretty standard educational background that leans towards software development, turbomachinery, control theory, and supersonic flow.
