Art Whaley replied to Frederik Borg's discussion How to setup ArduPilot for 3-channel fixed wing? in the group ArduPlane User Group
"Second for Rana's answer.  You hook the rudder to the aileron input and output of the apm - the rudder channel will be unconnected on the apm board on both sides.  This is how I've run my 3 channel supercub with great success.…"

Art Whaley replied to Aaron Lauzier's discussion Heavy Lifting Hexacopter for Aerial Photography
"Shoulder mount cameras are heavy, expensive, delicate and require lots of fingers to operate. (as do the smaller canons that are designed for professional handheld use.)   How do you plan to control zoom, focus, iris, pan and tilt at a minimum…"

Art Whaley replied to Aaron Lauzier's discussion Heavy Lifting Hexacopter for Aerial Photography
"I can't give a reply that you'll find directly useful, because I've got little experience with coptors... or ANYTHING on that scale.   But I hope that when you say you know it's a big undertaking you understand that this…"

Art Whaley replied to Mikko Pihlajamäki's discussion Setting up 3ch airplane (Easystar) with Arduplane?
"I don't have specific experience with the AIOP, but since the arduplaneng firmware is ported from the normal arduplane, I THINK this advice is still correct.   For a three channel plane (no ailerons) you connect the rudder to the AILERON…"

Art Whaley commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Texas drone bill clears use by police, not civlians
"It's really something in-between.  The DEA absolutely CAN come into a state that allows medical marijuana use and arrest all those cancer patients.   But in 2009 the Justice Department issued a statement that they wouldn't be…"

Art Whaley commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Texas drone bill clears use by police, not civlians
"It IS wrong of me to use my drone or any other device to take pictures through my neighbor's windows or over their privacy fence into their backyard.  We all know that 'drones' have a PR problem...  one of the ways to get…"

Art Whaley replied to John Koches's discussion Interaction while in Auto Mode
"You can upload a new or updated flight plan in the air, as long as the telemetry link is working, and you can also make a looping flight plan by using the "Jump" feature in the mission planner.  That way it can loop a series of…"

Art Whaley replied to Iman's discussion Hobby King Ardupilot in the group ArduPlane User Group
"I'm a happy APM 2.0 user/owner.  I'd never seen any compelling reason to upgrade to the 2.5, though I did like the idea of getting it down to one board and getting the gps offboard so I can put the brain in the belly of the beast and…"

Art Whaley replied to Steven G's discussion Mission Planning with multiple altitudes
"First off - I fly in Oklahoma where the ground is flat and so I haven't USED verify height.  But according to the manual, it doesn't exactly do what you want, because it only checks and adjusts the ground altitude at waypoints. By…"

Art Whaley commented on Chris Anderson's blog post Texas drone bill clears use by police, not civlians
"It seems to me that exception 6 is good - As long as you have the property owner or occupant's permission you can shoot all you want.  That's a good rule to keep yourself out of trouble with any video recording.  And a prosecutor…"

Art Whaley replied to kushal's discussion mini uav
"I"m a little uncomfortable with this conversation...   One of the forum rules here is that we don't discuss military applications of UAVs.   If you're looking for a drone for a military or government application I really…"

Art Whaley replied to Cuddy's discussion Software altitude limit?
"We're talking about a small drogue parachute to keep the aircraft nose down and at a reasonable speed...  a co2 supply seems like a pretty heavy thing to haul all the way to the edge of space just for stabilization. There are a lot of…"

Art Whaley replied to Cuddy's discussion Software altitude limit?
"Ardupilot should keep running if it loses a GPS fix, which it will above that altitude, so you don't need any sort of reboot... if it gets a fix back it should start using it. As you think about design... a couple of concerns.  One -…"

Art Whaley replied to Cuddy's discussion High Altitude Glider
"Ken has the answer there.  We're using the Lassen Trimble LP, which does work at that altitude.  You have to go into the configuration utility and change it from the proprietary binary Lassen protocol to output NMEA sentences and make…"

Art Whaley replied to Jason Brown's discussion Is there a tutorial that goes through all the Ardupilot code?
"I'm also (slowly) working on a balloon launch glider at the moment!  We definitely need to compare notes as we go forward.  There's no reason that ardupilot hardware won't work with the firmware rewritten.  Though of…"

Art Whaley replied to Jason Brown's discussion Is there a tutorial that goes through all the Ardupilot code?
"I've been nibbling around the edges of the code for a few weeks myself.  Are you two asking about tutorials on using the code as is to get a plane flying itself, or about an overview of what does what so you can start really coding to…"
