"Yes, you will get real time telemetery via FTDI (ox Xbee) when the GPS is plugged in. You just can't send data the other way, back to ArduPilot."

Real time telemetry will be sent via ftdi cable plugged into laptop.Question 1: does anyone have code examples for a working ardupilot ground project?Question 2: I'm still confused about the serial port. Will I get real time telemetry via an ftdi USB cable while the gps is plugged in…See More

Hello.
Yes, I was able to get some pretty interesting results with my RC truck and Ardupilot. I was using a Tamiya Super Clod Buster, which uses some pretty beefy motors, and a Tamiya 2-motor ESC. The only requirement is that you need quite a bit of room to allow the Ardupilot to acquire a decent GPS signal, but once it does, you can try both waypoint mode and return to launch mode. Usually, the truck was finding waypoints (or home positions) to within 3-5 meters or so if I remember correctly. Also, the truck seems to "snake" its way while traveling between waypoints, which is probably attributable to the GPS update rate and the GPS resolution, as well as the truck speed. Better results might be obtained by working more in these areas, as well as playing around with the PID controller settings. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any specific questions, and please share your results when you are up and running.
Cheers!
