Hi AllI'm working with an advocacy group in New Zealand to help them survey and record the state of our fresh water systems, specifically, looking at our rivers and lake shores for stock incursions.…Continue

"Thanks Luke - all good comments and food for thought. Depending on funding, we'll be doing a greenfield build, so I'm hoping to take advantage of everyone's previous work. I'll be trying to keep everything as simple and effective…"

"Hi John I'm following your project with interest as I'm attempting later this year to do something similar here in the UK, monitoring the spread of invasive non native plant species that are increasingly taking over many of our…"

"Thanks Francois, it's a novel idea. We will be launching from grassed areas with road access near the target rivers. The rivers themselves might not always be accessible or safe but it's worth considering."

"@ Robert, it looks like a scaled down version of the Horizon Hobby Icon A5. Probably fun to fly as a sport plane, but it looks like the specs are inaccurate: 470g flying weight doesn't sound realistic. The HH A5 is 1240g. Reading between the…"

"About 25 minutes normally is my flight time. Landing is not an issue if there is enough room take off there is enough room to land. Its a good idea to be able to hand fly properly, that opens up all sorts tight spaces. "

"Interesting you mentions this, I've been thinking just the same thing: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__17108__HobbyKing_EPO_Seaplane_1090mm_PNF_.html My problem is where I want to fly is usually forested, making LZ's,…"

"@ John, if landing zones are an issue, and since you will be required to waterproof your electronics and camera gear in any event, have you considered flying off water? You might want to emulate Jerry Luther's approach. He hand launches a…"

"Yeah, I know about the small cameras.  I'm a fan myself, and have a Sony WX10 for my heli.  I just see many people fixated on DSLR's so my brain goes straight to that. My experience has been that I wouldn't try to use a…"

"Some of the smaller digital cameras pack a lot in to a small package. For example, using a 16MP camera that weighs less than 200g means we can start at the park-flyer end of the size range. As for landing space, in NZ we have no shortage of large…"

"How long does that 1km square mission take Gary? A big part of my hesitation for fixed wing, is landing zones.  And I guess I had it in my head that we were talking about flying a DSLR, which would require a big aircraft and LZ.  But if…"

John Hart replied to John Hart's discussion Fresh water Aerial Survey UAV
"Thanks for reinforcing my prejudice Gary, that fixed wing is my choice for more of a slow, loitering approach to imagery (and I'm quite fond of walks outdoors :) Most of the rivers we're looking to survey are <50m wide so it's the…"

"@John yes that's exactly what I do, you can also force the shutter speed high which helps with blur. You have to be aware of the available light then. Fixed wing airframes can be very simple to operate, I fly the same pattern every time and…"

"My opinion: Soon as you determine that you must remain in visual range, fixed wing aircraft don't make sense anymore.  VTOL/Copter is the way to go.  Multi-copters are mechanically simple.  Helicopters are more complicated but…"
