Loiter ends in crash

Started Apr 19, 2012 0 Replies

I recently put an APM1.4 1280 into a Gaui 500-X frame, using the motors and ESCs from the GAUI 330XS. I like these motors and ESCs, they run very smoothly and reliably with minimal vibration. After…Continue

A week of Arducopter misery

Started this discussion. Last reply by Gustav Kuhn Sep 22, 2011. 28 Replies

After a week spent working on my Arducopter 2, I have still failed to get it airborne and I've broken two props already. In the interests of other people avoiding the misery I've  had to go through,…Continue

This is my second issue with my AC2. My previous post 'GPS prevents motors arming' describes the history of my AC setup problems. This issue relates to the flight data feedback received in APM…Continue

Hi forum, I'm a relative newbie in that although I bought my AC about 6 months back, I've only now started working on it.Problem: with GPS connected my AC2 won't arm the motors/boot properly. As soon…Continue

"As an early adopter and gross mis-spender on sUAS technology, I am already firmly in the Trough of Disillusionment. When monitoring the forums, I can immediately sniff out a new, overhyped product that is poorly-tested, under-supported and very…"

John Stuart commented on Todd Hill's blog post Attack of the Clones!
"I agree, I just don't get the logic that you can create drones out of the cheapest components possible. Its an aircraft after all, it goes against all the logic of aircraft engineering, which requires multiple redundancy. It worries me that…"

"The rubber cushions are a brilliant idea, for those of us striving for stable video. I'll be ordering a few of these to see if I can adapt them for my MK frames. Well done! Any plans for a vibration-reducing load rail setup? Something like the…"

John Stuart commented on Azam Shahani's blog post Impressive new camera gimbal
"The thing with expense when it comes to aerial video by UAV is that there is a tension between cost and expendability. Like it or not this technology is still quite risky (as with all aviation) so you can't compare the cost & performance of…"

John Stuart replied to James Dinh's discussion What's the best prop and prop size for hexa with 880kv motors?
"Larger props are also heavier and make your motors work harder, ie there is also an efficiency trade-off. But if you can afford mega-bucks for carbon fibre props, this won't be a problem."

John Stuart commented on Mike Thorlin's blog post Skywalker Flight #4 - Resounding success...mostly
"Hi Mike, no what I meant was the APM-based failsafe. This is independent of the receiver failsafe, if the APM ceases to receive transmitter input it activates either RTL or 'continue with mission', depending on how you configure it. You…"

John Stuart commented on AirviewLive's blog post Shielded hexacopter is safer than the rest

Profile Information

About Me:
I'm just starting out in UAVs, aerial and video photography and FPV flying. I am a Hang IV equivalent rated hang glider pilot in my country and so I have a keen sense of flying by the seat of the pants, especially landing with no go-around power! Being a HG pilot also teaches you a lot about micromet, which I'm sure is useful in the UAV area too.
Tell us a bit about your UAV interest
I am primarily interested in UAV technology as a platform for aerial photo and videography. My country is blessed with huge wide open spaces, with little air traffic, and so ample opportunity to practice this technology safely.
