Why is the FBW-B speed target constantly changing.

Started this discussion. Last reply by Leo Hogg Nov 20, 2012. 1 Reply

Sorry to blat this site with more questions but I have some time off and got lots of data from the weekends flying. In FBW-B I had large speed/power oscillations so started adjusting PIDs in the…Continue

2 Aileron channels. Has anyone got differential working properly?

Started this discussion. Last reply by RaptorUAS MD Apr 3. 10 Replies

I have put the 2nd aileron on a separate channel so that I can have differential (defiantly makes my plane fly better). It was working fine with the APM not connected. I have set it up with the wiki…Continue

Tweaking the airspeed indicator.

Started this discussion. Last reply by Leo Hogg Nov 16, 2012. 3 Replies

I suspect my airspeed indicator is under reading as it was consistently below the GPS groundspeed.I was trying to be cleaver and export the tlog into a spreadsheet and take averages of airspeed and…Continue

Calculated wind vector.180deg out

Started this discussion. Last reply by Tim McPherson Nov 18, 2012. 7 Replies

After checking the log of yesterdays flight I see that the status page wind direction varied between 260 and 310 (about 7ms). However, my observed wind and the local weather reports indicate an…Continue

RaptorUAS MD replied to Leo Hogg's discussion 2 Aileron channels. Has anyone got differential working properly?
"Being able to use 2 sets of ailerons per wing, that would act in coordinate manner for normal flight and deployed as flapts/spoilerons for landings would mean increase redundancy in servo failure would therefore be a safer platform.  Very…"

Leo Hogg commented on Rob_Lefebvre's blog post Helicopter Presents Attractive Alternative to Multi-rotors and Fixed-wing UAVs
"Interesting. I would like to build a gas engined helicopter, but I'd be concered about the autopilots ability to cope with engine failure. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the current software would stall the rotors and the heli…"

"Ooops, I guess I misspoke. I thought you were converting the side profile and using the top curvature as your base. So this was after your wing was already lofted (I presume is the way you modeled your wing), then you sketched your mount, on the…"

Leo Hogg commented on Leo Hogg's blog post Development of a composite twin boom pusher airframe.
"I can't remember excatly how it was drawn in solidworks. But Convert Entities can be used in sketch mode to copy profiles. The section is an old Clark-Y, the profile is constant along the wing, this made fabrication easier. I think you could…"

"Good info! Thank you very much! I was about to go through the hassle of creating my part, then cavity/cutting the wing profile out of the part... Would have been a horrible technique! I assume however that your technique would require a constant…"

"Thank you, I've also been following your work. For the wing boom mounts, I used part of the wing profile and did convert entity on the top side of the airfoil section, it can be helpful to save profiles as blocks in solidworks. Constructing the…"

Fête Mobile replied to Leo Hogg's discussion 2 Aileron channels. Has anyone got differential working properly?
"At the moment, dual aileron does not seem to work with crow/spoileron configuration in any stabilized mode.  So no, at this moment I don't think it will work.  If I can find the time I'll try to solve this problem myself, but…"

Mike Mac replied to Leo Hogg's discussion 2 Aileron channels. Has anyone got differential working properly?
"I land on the FBW-A mode. That’s my favorite more for flying around and landing. And my Crow is on a three-position switch for I basically have two settings. Do you think it’s possible to make it work in that mode? .  "

Fête Mobile replied to Leo Hogg's discussion 2 Aileron channels. Has anyone got differential working properly?
"Hi Mike.  Were you going into crow/butterfly with stabilize mode?  I encourage you to try it again, at least on the ground, and try it in MANUAL mode.  As I said, that's the work-around to this bug.  I wish we didn't…"

Mike Mac replied to Leo Hogg's discussion 2 Aileron channels. Has anyone got differential working properly?
"I tried dual ailerons last summer but every time I activated the "CROW" switch to reduce lift for landing it would go into a hard roll. I could never figure it out. I have not tried the latest firmware with dual ailerons. It was very…"

Fête Mobile replied to Leo Hogg's discussion 2 Aileron channels. Has anyone got differential working properly?
"Hi All.  I've tried out the AP2.68 firmware.  It's really nice that the dual aileron control is in the firmware (finally) so I don't have to patch the code each time there's an update.  I've been using dual…"

UAV Portable Base Station

Posted on January 1, 2013 at 3:30pm 11 Comments

I found that a conventional laptop computer is fragile for use in the field and decided to create my own ruggedized PC that would be suitable for use in the field and the workshop. Having upgraded my desktop, I have a spare socket AM3 motherboard. The motherboard has an integral video adapter, so will not require a bulky graphics card. To power the PC, I will use a 12 volt ATX power supply. A 19" Samsung LED LCD will be used. The screen comes with a 14.2V mains power…

UK EPP-FPV

Posted on July 12, 2012 at 3:30pm 6 Comments

Having imported and build a Hobbyking EPP-FPV aircraft, I would reccomend against UK buyers purchasing from the states since the postage and import duty was more expensive than the model itself and the quality of the kit was below what I expected. However I have assembled it and it has proven to be useful in my…
