I had a crash flying a big wing (Skywalker x8), when I hit the RTL switch, the plane started to pitch/roll wildly and crashed. The plane was flying at 30 meters, and the RTL altitude was set to 100…Continue

Hey Patrick,

The issues that we're facing are not really related to the video link, that's perfect. Our telemetry link that uses zigbee 900's for communication completely stops transmitting as soon as the plane takes off. The connection comes back as soon as the plane lands, also our plane is built out of carbon fiber which we assumed was blocking the signal from our top mounted antenna. However shifting the antenna to the bottom of the plane hasn't helped. We've range tested our zigbee's and they seem to have no problem communicating over long distances, which has left us quite puzzled. Do you have any idea why this might be happening? I'll sent you pictures of the plane tomorrow!

Hello Warren.  I have a similar setup on one of my fly wings. 5.8ghz video / 900mhz telemetry with zigbee. It's an EPO foam plane, so I have no issues with the carbon fiber, however, you should not have an issue if the antenna is bottom mounted. I would be interested to see your setup. It does sound strange. Have you eliminated cabling problems or connector issues? From your description of the problem, it appears that the actual radiated power is very low and it works as soon as the receiver gets close to the transmitter on the ground. I would try just walking the plane away from the CGS to see when it drops.

For my latest build, I have both video and telemetry going over 5ghz digital so I have eliminated the 900mhz and extra electronics/antennas.  Are you using analog video or HD? Maybe you should consider eliminating the 900mhz link altogether.

We're using HD video and we're definitely considering using the wifi link to transmit telemetry. However, we wanted the two separate radio links as a failsafe. We've tested our 900MHz system at fairly large distances (~1km) and it works perfectly outside the aircraft. The problem only crops up when the electronics operate inside the airplane :P.
Thanks for the help, I'll send you pictures of our setup soon so that you get a better idea of what our setup looks like.

Hello Patrick, stumbled on this in the http://diydrones.com/forum/topics/3-km-hd-fpv-system-using-commodity-hardware tread:

http://www.msdist.co.uk/product_Ubiquiti-WispStation-M5.php

seems its the same specs as the bullet, no need to mod for the antenna

@Patrick, I have PI 3 but I can pick up a PI 2 if there are any issues with the image running on a 3. Thanks so much!!!
