DaVinci ChallengeAs instructional materials designer for the DaVinci Challenge, I need to provide clear and concise guidance on all aspects of building and operating drones including preparing ground control systems. With Microsoft as a sponsor of the DaVinci Challenge, I usually start by encouraging installing Mission Planner or APM Planner 2.0 on Windows, despite the difficult of installing unsigned drivers on Windows 8. For those participants with a MAC, guidance is to install APM Planner…See More

Ronald Pandolfi replied to Rajan Sachdeva's discussion 3D printer suitable for drone in the group 3D Printing Drone Parts
"Most any printer should work for a quadcopter, provided the build volume is large enough.  ABS and PLA are both good materials for simple quadcopters.  For larger quadcopters, use carbon tubes to connect the body with motor mounts."

"Great List of suggested upgrades!  Although I too like and continue to enjoy the X8, it is not perfect nor is it well suited for composites.  At Kashmir World Foundation we have created a much improved blended wing body aircraft that…"

Ronald Pandolfi replied to Eric Kubicka's discussion Question - Who are the major 3D firms used in for UAS/UAV parts? in the group 3D Printing Drone Parts
"Hi Eli, Sounds like we have a similar design "trick."  To make "tough" aircraft, we place FDM printed sacrificial sections behind nylon SLS surfaces at "impact zones."  A 1.5mm thick SLS nylon surface will…"

Ronald Pandolfi replied to Eric Kubicka's discussion Question - Who are the major 3D firms used in for UAS/UAV parts? in the group 3D Printing Drone Parts
"Hi Eli, Congratulations for having achieved many flights on an FDM airframe. You must be a great pilot! At Kashmir-Robotics we build planes to survive "hard" landings. FDM tends to crush, often dramatically, on hard landings yielding small…"

Ronald Pandolfi replied to Eric Kubicka's discussion Question - Who are the major 3D firms used in for UAS/UAV parts? in the group 3D Printing Drone Parts
"Hi Eric, Most any 3D printer, process, or vendor will provide adequate quality for small fixtures or other simple parts. If you want to build your own 3D printer, I suggest you purchase a kit on eBay.  If you want to purchase a small 3D…"

Ronald Pandolfi replied to Brian S's discussion X8 parts needed in the group X8
"Best option may be able to print two new winglets.  Aerodynamic forces are so low on the winglets, that you can print them out of cheap ABS or PLA using the lowest density setting.  You can thin them up compared with the original foam…"

Wildlife Conservation UAV Challenge

Drones can play a key role in countering poaching and other wildlife crimes that threaten endangered species.  In response to President Obama’s Executive Order on Wildlife Protection, Kashmir-Robotics is hosting the Wildlife Conservation UAV Challenge to foster innovation and invention in the design, fabrication, and utilization of unmanned aircraft to assist with counter poaching and illicit wildlife trafficking. It calls on students, hobbyists, academics, and corporations to cooperate in a…See More
