I'm looking for advice on a few things, it's a long story so I'll start at the beginning:  The Engineering Club at my college wants to launch a high-altitude (AKA weather, sounding) balloon with a…Continue

"I know this topic is old, but I just remembered this and had a idea. 1. Have a plane that can survive re-entry speeds 2. At a reasonable altitude, deploy a shoot from the plane to have it decelerate to a maneuverable speed 3. Disconnect from the…"

"have you worked out what paraglider design you wish to use. I am a paragliding pilot and the biggest problem we have is cloud suck. and for your deployment idea I would strongly recommend a D bag system. the largest problem is line overs and twist.…"

"Yeah I thought of that too, but I think the potential problems with fixed-wing flight through the jet stream make it a bad idea.  The chances of it going into a spin it can't recover from seem a bit high, plus the risk of high wind forces…"

"I know this may be a bit late, but here is my idea... Attach a RC plane (Arduplane enabled) to the weather balloon and have it set to fly back to a predetermined way point and begin flying around. What I mean in more detail is to have the plane be…"

"Well, the budget has been approved and the non-powered UAV paraglider will be the project.  What I'm trying to figure out right now is exactly what we'll need.  It will need to be able to do the following: - Trigger servos in…"

"Interesting.  Well, I'm not in Australia and it's not going to be powered, so I'm not concerned about that.  As for the FAA and what not - this is being done through the college, so we'll be sure to follow all the laws,…"

"I think it's a popular activity mostly in theory at this stage Gary.  If the FAA starts to regulate onerously, most of this type of development will happen elsewhere in the world.  I'm sure the FAA recognizes that they need to…"

"I think the FAA might step forward shortly if this becomes a really popular activity. Remember it's a UAS if it can be controlled in three axis, a balloon, or free falling parachute falls outside of the UAS remit."

I'm looking for advice on a few things, it's a long story so I'll start at the beginning:  The Engineering Club at my college wants to launch a high-altitude (AKA weather, sounding) balloon with a payload of cameras, etc. to go up to hopefully ~100,000 ft. and take some video.  A lot of people have done this, so we wanted to try something a bit different.  Usually it's done just with a sealed foam box attached to a parachute, with the top of the parachute attached to a line running to the…See More
