The big guidance & navigational challenges for ARES arise from performing an aeromagnetic survey to investigate Mars' crazy crustal magnetism. This requires multiple, offset, parallel tracks at a constant altitude. There is an IMU on board, but sinc…

I would have thought that they could have dropped some stationary radio beacons in to improve their accuracy.

Condor, I found this explanation for how they will navigate the plane on Mars. The link takes you to a PDF file with some data on it. pdf.aiaa.org/preview/CDReadyMUAV2003_834/PV2003_6608.pdf

Anybody have an idea how they would navigate accurately without GPS?

A Link to the Mars Plane NASA project. http://marsairplane.larc.nasa.gov/platform.html I seen this and thought it might interest to the members of DIY. A long range drone to be sure.

Sorry, I stand corrected. The battery (it's actually a supercap) is rechargeable. It will last years, but each charge only retains sat info for about ten days. Config info is retained in nonvolatile memory.

The battery should last years. No need to power the unit on to preserve memory.
