Wired Article on the AUVSI Domestic Drone Meeting

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 5:43pm 0 Comments

From Wired:

For a day, a sandy-haired Virginian named Jeremy Novara was the hero of the nascent domestic drone industry.

Novara went to the microphone at a ballroom in a Ritz-Carlton outside Washington, D.C. on Wednesday and did something many in his business want to do: tenaciously challenge the drone regulators at the Federal Aviation Administration to loosen…

Check it Out! FPV, Multicopters used in a Discovery Documentary

Posted on October 5, 2012 at 2:52pm 4 Comments

I just noticed on Popular Science that Discovery Channel is putting out a new documentary called "Winged Planet". Looking at the previews, I was delighted to see that they have built a FPV Vulture with HiDef cameras, and they also used a multicopter for other shots.

What is the patent for?
Is it the project you alluded to last month?

What manufacturer & model parachute did you use in your video "Parachute Deployment: Episode 2"?

It was a hexagonal section I cut out from a black trash bag. I think it was 1 meter edge to edge. The shroud lines were regular nylon kite string. Each of the six lines were 80 cm or so long. I used a hexagonal cardboard riser about 4 cm edge to edge to zip down the lines during deployment. If needed, I can dig it up and take pictures/measurements.

Nice work, really nice work. When I first was this I was so excited because I was making the exact same thing. Same concept for the most part. Wow, very cool, now I have a great post to help me through the process of building it. Currently I have not built anything, as I have probably spent all of my 16 months designing my version of the orange hawk. I had a quick question for you, what servo did you use to move your motors? I have been trying to find a correct servo but was to confused with which one to use. Maybe we can exchange notes on the designs. I think I came up with a way to minimize the amount of servo's used to increase the efficiency. Really nice post, and I deferentially am looking forward to future posts.
