Hey all. So I've got a very basic understanding of arduinos and have read through all of the getting started/"Get it!" info a few times now. I'm in college and don't have a lot of discretionary…Continue

"Way too many people go tech first before they've had much experience flying. I highly highly recommend picking up a Turnigy 9x radio (w/ module) instead, flash it with Er9x and also picking up a WLtoys micro quad, either a v929, v939 or…"

"It really depends on what you want to do.  Yes, you could simulate stuff. But I would suggest just getting a good flight sim to start and actually learn to fly first.  You can learn the code without having a board.  Then get the board…"

"Thanks for the fast reply! I have roughly 230 bucks to spend right now(a bit more really, but I do have to buy stuff for Christmas. Dang friends...). I literally have nothing for a UAV yet. So I guess to simplify what I'm asking: is there any…"

"Do you mean you can afford the APM2.5 but not an aircraft?  The answer depends strongly on if you actually have something to put it in. If you do have something to put it in, you can do a lot!"

What can I do with ONLY the APM2.5+?

Hey all. So I've got a very basic understanding of arduinos and have read through all of the getting started/"Get it!" info a few times now. I'm in college and don't have a lot of discretionary income. I do however have enough to buy the APM2.5+. My question is would it be worth it for me to go ahead and buy just the APM2.5+ and get familiar with the firmware, simulation(have to buy x-plane too, I suppose), etc? Or should I wait and save until I can afford to put together a rudimentary, but…See More

"Hi Tyler   yes they can. Currenlty APM only supports one way telemetry but i think two way isnt far in the future. some guys have already done it with dev boards like Ardustations and Adru UNO's"

"Thank you! That was the kind of detailed explanation I needed. XBee's can both transmit and receive, correct?"

"We recommend that you use ArduPilotMega, not ArduPilot. It's simpler, easier to set up and more capable. Everything you need is listed here: http://diydrones.com/profiles/blogs/ardupilot-mega-home-page"

Hello, My Name is Newbie!

Hi all, this is my first time posting on here and let me start by saying i'm at least 2-3 tiers below the majority of you in terms of understanding all of this stuff.Long story short, I was recently possessed by the urge to build a UAV. I have limited experience with programming and have looked at the sample Arduino codes. I think that part I can handle to a certain degree. The issue I'm having is simply understanding what all I need to buy for step 1.Strangely enough, I want to start working…See More

About Me:
I'm attending the University of Central Florida where I'm on the fence between Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. I am, however, a COMPLETE newb to all of this.
Please tell us a bit about your UAV interest
I've worked with Estes rockets and small model planes before, but they were never very satisfying because you were so limited by them. I really want to try my hand at building a good, solid UAV with a few friends. I want to be able to look at it and know that I wrote its source code, that I assembled it, and know every piece to it.
