Motor problem the cause of my tuning problem and crashes.

If anyone else has 4008 530kv motors this may help. I was running 12” props with no problems but then changed to 14”, which is the recommended size for this motor. It would hover OK indoors but…Continue

"Dont suppose you saw the end result. Extremely low vibration values, no jello with direct mounted camera, crash survivability, twice the yaw rate of other copters.Original idea taken to a successful conclusion. Come on. "

Profile Information

About Me:
I grew up in aviation as my father worked for B.O.A.C.
Gained my PPL at about 20 and became a Hang-glider instructor for a while.
Then 10 years in the early computer industry (when you had to get inside them to fix them).
When early unregulated microlights (ultralights) started crashing in the early 80s I became a CAA test pilot(groupD). This also involved submitting aerodynamic and structural calculations. 5 years as a freight pilot (Russia, Africa) but now working as Captain on Airbus from Heathrow. Was flying R.C. all this time including Helicopters. My own aircraft design was approved and almost finished before life/kids/mortgage swamped it.
Tell us a bit about your UAV interest
Mostly for aerial photography.

Passive thrust vectoring with anti vibration mounts.

Posted on January 29, 2013 at 3:28pm 34 Comments

Have constructed an enclosed ‘H’ frame carbon/Kevlar quad with soft mount front and rear arms for vibration reduction. Initially yaw was awful as the arms tilted in the wrong direction and opposed any motor torque so I had to stiffen the mounts to prevent yaw reversal. Now I have reversed the motors in the code and the tilt…

Quadcopter anti-vibration tube mounts.

Posted on January 19, 2013 at 3:23pm 17 Comments

Having seen a vast improvement in the Arducopter handling when vibration was reduced I decided to experiment further. I thought it was worth trying to soft mount the tubes so cobbled together a test frame on a bit of 4x2. The 12mm tube mounts are held in place with ‘o’ rings. The video is with standard 75 shore rings 17mm ID. This was…

Gopro 3 axis camera mount.

Posted on November 26, 2012 at 10:00am 13 Comments

There is not a great selection of decent 3 axis camera mounts for gopro sized cameras so I have started building my own. The first one will be a ‘nose mount’ and I may later consider a belly mount for quads etc. It will have one standard sized digital servo for roll and 2 micro sized ones. The belt drive gearing is…
