what you want to do is very possible withe the ardupilot board + GPS (Ublox is best) you don't even have to buy the shield board and the sensors
+ Happykillmore and Jordi did devellop a good soft that allows you to program within minutes a multi waypoint path
you'll also need a FTDI cable to program the ardupilot and set few flags in the config file (.H) and that's it
sounds difficult but it's not really, i could give you a hand on that when you ve got the hardware
