Thanks for the reply. It looks like I may have made a mistake. I have an APM1, but apparently that is not the same as ATmega1280. I just noticed that recent APM1s are based on ATmega2560. So I may be okay."

But I think the codebase has finally outgrown the 1280. You could try and disable the CLI or Mavlink.
