Prelude :
Hi folks
This is the short version of a very long story about how to create a Tricopter from almost nothing. A story of trial and error, frustration and hard time. Maybe this story will allow future people to make less mistake than I have done myself (with some help by a…

Carl La France said… Hey Maxime! You get full marks for trying in my book ! I remember when your Blog post came out on May 17 and you turned the project into Tri copter I hope it works out for you
Not may of us decide to design and build our own plane with the materials at hand . I do everything twice . Wrong the first time so I know how not to do it and I can do it right the second time . When your project finally flies Hey! you get the satisfaction of knowing it was you that did it . You are way ahead of me . You are already into TRI's Have a good day! Carl
Maxime Carrier said… lol thanks for the explanation so I'm not ready to make my own airfoil, I have tested Clark Y on my scratch build so I think I will continue on this way if I decide to retry the experience.
Carl La France said… Maxime I should be posting this weekend I have my drone back to the Metal shop and re worked it into a Jet I only get to work on it at lunch and breaks I have every thing cut out and tacked together I Just have to finish weld grind and acid wash the frame it is even lighter than it was before I mounted the EDF on nylon rails to attach to the Aluminum Exoskeleton The Hobby shop phoned and my 100 amp ESC and 6 cell lypo are in. I wont be picking them up until fri pm or sat am. With the EDF in the Fuselage Besides scooping air from the sides it is also going to bring air through the front to cool the ESC and Lypo which are going to be suspended one above the other . Then I have to re work some of the rigid foam I cut for the fuselage. I can almost guarantee there is nothing else like it out there Have a Good Day!
Carl La France said… Maxime I am in transition stage right now with my project I finished the wing and the fuselage has been sitting for a while now I am ready go back at it and in the meantime I have come up with a bunch of new ideas for it got more materials ND I have made the airframe even lighter I am working on the rudder and elevator Trying to decide trycycle or tail dragger?I got an " H.D."Extreme action Camera for it I tried the camera out the other day driving down the back road and high way where Live . When I played it back it was as if the video was from another land usually when you are driving you are looking down the road The camera took in everything you don't notice when you are driving I might strap it to my Radian pro and give it a try. when I do something significant I will post Have a good day.
Carl La France said… If Iget a chance tomorrow I will round up my bits and pieces and get you a pix
Carl La France said… Maxime I have been away from planes for a while we just hauled the dive boat for the winter and did a tune up on the snow mobiles the beans in the field I fly over are ready to harvest they took them off yesterday after watching several you tube videos of airplanes with large lypo batteries crash and burn . figured I would wait until the crop was off to try any thing with my new plane I went to the snow mobile show in TO yesterday and an the way back I stopped at "Great Hobbies" in Miassauga and picked up a Multiplex Easy Star and will "Morph " My radian Pro into it with flaps and Ailerons and a reinforced fuselage and extra wing spar . I am saving my F4 for when there is snow on the ground to put together . Have a good day!
OlivierD. said… Hi Maxime, at this point, we need to do whatever it takes for these people to men up and address the safety issue. The reports are piling up, if it goes on like this, there will be a serious accident one day and then this fun stuff will be banned everywhere. Couldn't care less what the admin thinks, so long as they act on this and work towards a viable solution. If we get to that point, then it will not have been a complete waste of time.
OlivierD. said… Hi Maxime, to make it safe, you need to figure out a way to be able to completely bypass the APM if it gets wonky, and it will at times. Some sort of external failsafe, something like this:
http://www.millswoodeng.com.au/failsafe_device.html
It can take over control when the AP fails, enough so to give you the required authority to land safely. The other option would be dual receivers and some wizzardry to switch to the second RX when the first one receives a failsafe signal but the outputs don't match pre-recorded failsafe positions. Something along those lines.
OlivierD. said… Maxime, you seem to know your way around electronics so I am sure you will figure out a way to make it safe. I am interested in your RX switcher, where did you get it, do you have any information on it? Thanks!
