A small modification to the AP Mount Library Code
Hi, I have made a small modification to the "AP_Mount" library to be used mainly by the filmmakers, basically is:
1- Add a dead zone when we use the joystick mode to prevent undesired movements of cam, you can change the dead zone using the min and max value in…

I previously posted a BLOG about setting up the FJI F450 Flamewheel with the APM2 and the copter was a great success so I thought I'd put together a smaller and lighter version - The F330 Flamewheel.
My F500 weighs 2 pound 11 ounces ready to fly and I am shooting for 1 pound 11 ounces with…

Hi, I previously set up a KKX525 with the APM2, but when one of my ESC's started fading, I thought I'd try something a little more upscale.
I have now put together a DJI 450F Flamewheel ARF including DJI motors, Opto ESCs and props from "RC-Drones" at a reasonable $180.00 and am quite…

Most of the pro multicopter set-ups have feedback from the ESCs so the controller knows the status of the motors. This is useful for all kinds of reason including:
1. debugging the causes of crashes - the controller could log when a motor has stopped running.
2. allows faster and better reaction to a motor failure perhaps saving you from a crash at least for…

It was a busy weekend. One of my earliest concerns with this project was the lack of an ON/OFF switch that could handle the current of the system and that would not look like something from an old junk box. I wanted it to be easy to use, easy to access (translate: no where near the propellors), and completely…

Hexacopter APM2 Loiter mode Battery Endurance Test
Testing my fully charged HaiYin 5000mAh 4S 30-40c battery. Almost 17 minutes of mostly Loiter mode flying and a bit of manual flying towards the end.

Successful maiden Altitude Hold and Loiter test on first day flying with my Hexacopter
I managed to test the Altitude Hold and Loiter functions of my ArduPilot Mega2 controlled Hexacopter and was pretty impressed with it. There was strong winds initially but when it died down to a breeze I turned on the altitude hold and it seemed to hover with a deviation of around 2m. Then when I turned on the Loiter mode, my hexacopter stayed within a 5m radius…

Stinger 64 HAB Early Integration Pictures with APM2
I've just finished the build and will begin early full up integration testing in the next day or so on NTNS-2. This is a highly modified Stinger 64 with APM2. There are really 2 airframes. One is for flight testing, gain tuning, learning a little about APM2. I have to admit that there have been several issues. …

Testing/Training APM2 Data Logging
This episode we focused on getting the APM's data logging feature working, as well as integrating the results with Google Earth and the Mission Planner. It works really well! We're looking forward to putting it on the Shrike and start recording our flights.
See you Saturday,

EasyGlider Pro for aerial photography with APM2
We are working in several airplanes adapting them to take ortophotography like professionals, we have already tested and working fine the first prototype based on EasyGlider by multiplex. This is a very good plane that forgives to bad pilots with a big problem it has few space but enough to carry a good battery and the…

Adapter from HobbyKing's square board to the APM2
When started assembling my quadcopter I hated the thought of having to drill holes in the HobbyKing frame kits to get the APM2 mounted.
So I took some measurements, made these adapters in Google SketchUp and submitting them to Shapeways:…

Successful APM2 Failsafe Test
This week on MyGeekShow we tested the APM2's failsafe protocol. We approached this very carefully as a failure of the failsafe could result in damage or loss of the aircraft. We first ground tested the APM2 at various stages to determine when the APM2 would control the aircraft, as well how it responded to loss of control signal.
After determining the APM2 took control as predicted, we took the Shrike to the sky and put it to the real test;…

With the soldering on the APM2 complete (I think) it was time to move on with the stack up plates for the quad. For those who have not put their hand on an APM2, the Xacto knife with #11 blade provides some scale.
I am using aircraft plywood (it is on hand and paid for) rather than the FRP/G10 that is popular. Using…

On second thought, maybe ordering the APM2 assembled would have been a good idea.
Nah, why let someone else have all the fun? The board is wonderfully small and has convinced me that SMD components require learning new tricks if I plan to roll my own in the future. Over 35 years of through-hole work only…

As most of you may or may not know, I've been a big proponent of using PPM Sum (aka CPPM) with the Ardupilot since I first figured out how to make it work. The simplicity of just running a single wire from the Rx to the APM is very attractive. It eliminates 7 possible failure modes (losing the wire connecting…
