Demonstration of ArduCopter Autonomous Flight Capabilities
Hi all,
I've made two videos showing the ArduCopter Auto (and RTL in second video) capabilities of ArduCopter.
The first video is a flight with 5 waypoints at varying altitudes and includes AutoLand.
I only did not include Auto Takeoff in these videos but can confirm that also works well. There was limited takeoff space so I took…

Flir FPV with Hexacopter
Hi,
We were trying to find ways to secure (or at least patrol) a crime infested green belt in our area when one of the guys mentioned that it would be great to have a thermal camera on a helicopter to be able to spot these guys and perform some sort of aerial support for the guys on the ground.
Now, being involved in helis…

"In My Dreams" - FPV Video from Team Echelon
Some might have seen this but I'm posting it to my blog as it seems this is the spot to post stuff like this. Lots of fun in FPV we're having:
Shot across California from the Bay Area to El Mirage and a few spots in between. Special thanks to our fellow flyers and spotters. ;)

Autonomous Waypoint Flight Mode in SmartAP!
Now SmartAP autopilot has Autonomous Waypoint Flight Mode. The demo shown in the video above consisted of 4 waypoints. After the last waypoint quadcopter came back to the initial home position and automatically switched to position hold mode there. Moreover, autopilot has Stabilize,Altitude Hold, Position Hold and Return to Home flight modes. Flight can be controlled…

2012-11-24 MV to All:
I've only just joined the ArduPilot-Mega Opensource Project, and am only just beginning to dig into the codebase.
My goal is to implement a host of enhancements to our beloved APM Mission Planner application.
My cloned repository is named "markevogt-pcl-experimenting".
My first enhancements have now been coded, tested and pushed up to my repo:
1. Flight Data Panel: each of the (6) quickView panels now has black text on a colored…

Hexacopter APM2 Loiter mode Battery Endurance Test
Testing my fully charged HaiYin 5000mAh 4S 30-40c battery. Almost 17 minutes of mostly Loiter mode flying and a bit of manual flying towards the end.

Drones in the news
Adaptive Flight was contacted by CNN and ask to bring a UAV down to the studio and fly it on live camera while talking about it with the host Don Lemon. So we took a Hornet Micro and headed down to the studio. It was a lot of fun to show off this technology and put in a positive plug for domestic use of UAV's.…

Mission Space: Bixler Transportation Building Instructions
My original idea for the transportation involved wood, foam, and cement cylinders. After conversing with my father we put our ideas together and came up with an easier, lighter, and more effective design...classic engineering.
The new idea consists of a PVC tube frame with cement cardboard cylinders cut in half, and surrouded with bubble wrap.…

First quad flights successful.....pretty much.
I built my first quad from scratch. It's based on the ArduCopter. I used aluminium towel rods for the arms and some sixteenth inch aluminium plate for the support and sixteenth by half inch strips for landing gear. The motors are A2217-9 950Kv, APC 10 x 4.7 props, Hobby Wing 18A ESCs, Hyperion 4000mAh 3s lipo, and an APM…

IMAV 2012 Review
Maybe somebody heard about IMAV - International Micro Air Vehicle Conference and Flight Competition. This year it was held in Braunschweig, Germany, 3-6 July. I was there and presented a paper about my project - SmartAP. Also our team took part in flight competition. Here is a short summary of the trip.
In general, teams…

New product: i86AP Flight Stabilization Control Board
Today Hobbyking added a stabilisation control board for fixed wing aircraft to their catalogue. This board supports conventional, flying wings (delta) and v-tail aircraft, easily selectable by on-board jumper. Unfortunately for v-tail aircraft an y-cable is needed if you are using 2 servo's.
The board is controlled by…

I just got this video from André Kjellstrup.
It shows the importance of an OSD with instruments in hard FPV flight conditions.
From his own words: "lost visual far out over water when a sudden and passing snow shower with wet, heavy snow clogged lens". Fortunately his craft was equiped with ArduPilot Mega and…

Next generation flight simulator could be your next ground station
Imagine strapping into one of these instead of your standard head-mounted display for FPV!
The system, while linked to the likes of X-Plane and Microsoft Flight Sim, can take raw input from gyro data etc and put the pilot into that position. With a Mil-SPEC HMD, the system is really quite immersive and a fun ride. While not a traditional UAV…

First Flight with Auto Pilot Today (and anyone need a wind tunnel?)
First flight today in full manual mode with a brief session on stabilization mode. Plane: Slowstick - short wings, spinning 8x8 carbon prop, rudder elevator only.
Autopilot: Ardupilot mounted on stick in box from Bask Aerospace.
Ground Station: APM uploaded lastest firmware and using xbee link for comms to laptop.
Flight Report: Like all good flights it went well until the plane flipped onto its back and then I throttled back and waited for the hard…

Flight Mode Switching on a Futaba 9ZAP/ZHP
Hi All
This was a real head scratcher for me, so hopefully this will help others. I have had this radio for 4 years now but never used it as it was so complicated. I decided to RTFM which honestly just confused me the futaba manuals have never been to my liking. I read manuals for a living and compared to some of the rubbish ones this is definitely worse.
I tried all of the other methods listed for Futaba and couldn’t get them to work mostly because there is no "Switch…

How to Program 6 Flight Modes for ArdupilotMega - JR 9303 Example
If you want to have six modes, you'll probably have to configure your RC transmitter to do this. That's usually accomplished by mixing a two position switch and a three position switch on your transmitter.
However, no example is given as to how this mix might work. In the comments to this blog post…
