Flying with our new controller

The last week or so we've spent porting a version of the AeroQuad AQ32Plus code over to run on the AshimaCore board. One of our goals has been to get a common board that can run (or has the hooks put in place to run) several of the more popular open source flight controllers. Here's some video (why did we do this at night?) of us flying…

ARM Control Board / Flight Computer

I wanted to share with you a board that a couple of us have been working on for the last few months. We put it together to be an easy-to-access ARM Cortex-M4F flight controller. We also got a little frustrated with the STM peripherals library, so we've been building out a c++ object peripherals library that's open source with a nice, flexible expat license. Let me know if…

RC Touch - turning iPhone or iPad into a RC controller for drones

We ever posted a article in DIYdrones' forum to see the feasibility of turning iphone into a RC controller. It seems that people are not very keen on it, partly due to the lack of precise control through tilt action and partly due to the reluctance of giving up an actual control stick. So we disabled the tilt action and modified the interface into a RC simulation…

Return to Launch flight mode in SmartAP

I would like to share the latest SmartAP autopilot progress. As well as GPS Position Hold mode (introduced ~1 month ago), now it has Return to Launch flight mode. No matter wherever the copter is, just switch to RTL and it will come back to its home position autonomously. You can watch the video of Return to Launch test…

SmartAP Successful Flights

A week ago we made several successful flights with our own flight control system - SmartAP autopilot. At the moment Manual and Stabilize flight modes are ready. Below you can find a couple of videos. Both flight were made only in Stabilize Mode, no Altitude Hold or Position Hold activated. In the first one we checked hovering, in the second stability while…

How not build a 3dr Hexacopter

Decided to write up about my experience in building my lastest multicopter, a 3dr hexa. The lessons learned from the exercise include

  1. Check before you start , that you have all the screws  and spacers are available.
  2. Decide on what flight controller you are planning to use.
  3. Start your build early enough, so that you could catch some sleep.

I should thank the 3dr folks again for the awesome work they have done. The build was straight forward, the…

SmartAP - Smart Autopilot

For the last six month we (my friend and I) have been working on the development of autopilot. We called it SmartAP - Smart Autopilot.

It's all started in October 2011, when I decided to try to build our own autopilot, designed using the latest components.

Firstly, we purchased evaluation boards for a desired…

Arducopter code mods

I built my own quad from scratch using an alu frame and decided to control it using the ardupilot mega that I have lying around. I loaded the arducopter NG2 code on this and took it for a couple of flights, noting its behavior and how it felt like controlling it. My intentions are to make this a platform that is really easy to control from first person video too, as…

Gauging Interest: 4 Channel ESC for Brushless Motors (RS232/PWM/I2C + Atmel AVR's!)

I am designing (and may soon produce) a 4 channel electronic speed controller (ESC) for brushless RC motors.

The Problem

It seems as though everybody who builds a quadcopter uses 4 individual PWM ESC's (that are often zip-tied to the rotor arms).
