Easystar build.... rudder upgrade

The next mod to my Easystar, a larger rudder made out of balsa and installed with dubro hinges.

There seemed to be 2 main ways to increase the performance of the rudder on the Easystar the first would be to just extend the length of the current rudder and the second would be to increase both the height and the…

Webbie Test Flight

The Project SOAR group at Embry-Riddle got into the air again today. Although we couldn't get any time on the Autopilot (some problem with reading the Ublox5 GPS) we were able to test the Webbie as an on-board camera. The camera was attached to the EasyStar with 2" Velcro, which works well;

We mounted it screen-down, so the video would be upside-down. This is easily fixed in IMovie.

And here's the… Continue

How to get more room for payload in Easystar.

I made a new fuselage for the easystar to get more room for payload. This proto is made in 2 layers of carbonfiber. The carbonfiber is very easy to work with, so if any one out there like to make some modifications just go for it.

I got the carbonfiber from here

The weight of the T-REX fuselage is about 140g = 4.93 ounces - still need to make the inner fuselage so the… Continue

EasyStar Mods - Spar Upgrade

The more equipment that is installed on the plane, the more load the wing will need to take. To prevent the wings from flexing too much, the plastic spar can be replaced with a carbon one.

Materials:

1. Hacksaw

2. Masking tape

3. Carbon rod (5/16" OD or 8 mm)

4. Original spar

Process:

1. Line up the two spars to get an idea of where you will have to cut the carbon spar.

2. Wrap the the location that… Continue

EasyStar Mods - Spar Hole Reinforcement

Another simple modification to increase the spar holes strength. I notices that after just a few flights (and a few hard landings) that the spar holes in the wing started to stretch. To fix this problem, I reinforced the holes with fiber washers. (Note that these pictures were taken after I had already done this modification)

Materials:

1. Hobby knife

2. CA

3. Two fiber washers (5/16" ID x 3/4" OD)

Process:

1. Place the spar inside the hole and the… Continue

EasyStar Mods - Wing Root Magnets

In this modification, magnets are installed into the wing root. This modification was inspired by the tendency for the wings to vibrate themselves apart during flight. Since simply pinning the wings in place (either mechanically or with adhesive) would not allow the wings to be compliant during a hard landing, magnets seemed like a good substitution. The process for installing the magnets in the wing root is very similar to the process for installing magnets in the canopy (see my previous post,… Continue

EasyStar Mods - Magnetic Canopy

This is a pretty simply modification to the canopy to replace the plastic tabs with magnets. Once done, it is quick and simple to get the canopy on and off and, as a bonus, it makes a neat snapping sound when you put the canopy back on. The process is straightforward. (Note that these pictures were taken after I had already done this modification)

Materials:

1. EasyStar RC plane

2. Hobby knife

3. Epoxy or CA

4. Four neodymium magnets (I used 0.25" diameter, 0.125"… Continue

My Ardupilot v2.0 code mod's

After the 1st test flight and seeing the plane wobble too much ive edited the code to make the following changes...

Original code

#define roll_P .8 //roll PID proportional

Rudder to sensitive

1st test

#define roll_P .5 //roll PID proportional

No wobble at all but wont turn...

2nd test

#define roll_P .65 //roll PID proportional

Still too sensitive but much better then .8 & seems to turn with… Continue

A long-held ambition

When I was a small boy, I used to watch the Jindivik target drones take off from Llanbedr (see http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/hangar/1999/dera/targets.htm) on family holidays to North Wales, where my father was born. I've been interested in unmanned flight ever since.

Currently, I have built nothing whatever in this line, but I have done a lot of reading (not least here - thanks Chris!). Ultimately, I'm thinking of… Continue
