Nurf Flying Wing Design

All,

I just wanted to share a design we have been working on for the FPV/DIY UAV crowd.

Our goal was to design something relatively rugged, easy to build/use and affordable.  And since we CNC hot wire cut foam cores for a living it needed to be manufacturable with our current…

EPP FPV Wing Project

I have designed my own flying wing and had it cut from flyingfoam. I would love the input of some of the members of DIYDRONES. The span is 60", I chose an MH60 airfoil and added about 2 deg washout. I cutout the motor mount and servo mounts on my CNC router.…

Small Girl Flying from Octocopter? Really?

We decided that it was time to test out the stability of the DJI Wookong M electronics on the CineStar 8 from FreeFly Systems.

So we flew a small girl around the park without making any gain adjustments in the DJI assistant.

UAV Inspired by Maple Seed.

Those of us in the North Country, are very familiar with the shape and mess that we have to clean up every year.  Yes the venerable maple seed.  Lockheed has found a way to turn this into a military drone.  Way to go, Lockheed!

This design seems familiar, very much like Jack Crossfire's Marcy mono-wing.…

Flying Wing Testing - No Stabilizers and Expos

While adding the AMP to the Shrike, we wanted to understand Flying Wings a little better and explore expos.  We incrementally increased expose to 0%, 30%, and 60%, then flew the Raptor with the existing vertical stabilizer at 100%, 50%, and 0%. We were surprised to find that it flew just fine with 0% stabilizer! This test was in low wind, however, so it will…

The beginning - Understanding prop variables for efficient long range flight

After flying the raptor several times with the 8"x4" prop, we felt like we were stuck in 2nd gear not harnessing the full potential of the motor.  We decided to fly the raptor…

How long will unregulated FPV and RC last?

Another title might be "How long before we kill someone?".

Why such a provocative title? Well, a few days ago a fellow RC enthusiast approached me brimming with pride and sense of accomplishment. He wanted to tell me how he had flow his FPV RC airplane up to 3500 feet and in the clouds and successfully…

First Flight of 3D Printed Firefly Mark One Quadcopter Frame

Firefly Mark One Flies in TREX Configuration.  It's like a Space Odyssey!

As you can see above the 3D printed frame project has advanced one more step.  I have fitted the 3D printed hub with 4 cut down TREX 450 (12mm) tail booms.  It's being flow in Stability Mode.  Just a note on cutting the…

Four modes switch for Futaba T6EX

The T6EX doesn't have a 3 position switch channel, so I had to combine channel 5 and 6 to get four modes. I made it work with a pot that has double terminals for each knob position, so that way there is always 2 pins to connect cables to for a single position.

Think of this knob as a bridge between same terminals: A to A, B to B, etc, closing the circuit to ground.

Channel 6 is connected to a terminal A and a terminal B from the opposite side.

Channel 5 is…

Arducopter with 8 Motors - Crash, Rebuild and First Flights

Here is video of first flights with the new lighter Hashcopter. PIDs make it a bit agressive and unstable because of reduced weight. Also you can see the massive camera flying with the copter.

Story goes like this:

I had a bad crash after few hours of flight time with Hashcopter. Crash was caused by flying the battery too empty and one off the ESCs cutting power off. The copter is capable of landing with 7 motors but I made a mistake flying to…
