Lipo powered telemetry

Wanted to have a self powered telemetry pack in order to save up the battery of my tablet.

So I tried this:

Hooked up the 3DR radio to a 2S lipo via a ubec.

This pack is then to be fixed to the back of the tablet.

The battery leads are external for charging purposes.

The ubec is to be changed by one with a build in lipo alarm.

This is still a work in progress and requires some fine tuning…

Showing APM telemetry data on Hitec Aurora’s screen (3rd edition)

This is the third iteration of my Ardupilot Mega to Hitec telemetry adapter. Adapter no longer requires modifications to APM itself, but instead connects to telemetry port of APM and it has a pass through connector for telemetry transmitter. I made PCB this time using SMD parts for smaller size:…

USAV - Telemetry system

USAV is the Unmanned Social Arial Vehicle - A drone with an android based auto pilot system that communicates through Google talk and Twitter. Due to the weather and the fact that an H-frame is being built for the vehicle, no flying is possible here. But I'm making good use of the wait :)

So snow is still falling here in the north and it's not really flying weather.

So I decided to make good of the waiting and create a telemetry unit for the USAV.

I…

RcTimer cable blunder becomes a 3dr modem + Mini mOSD solution?

I decided to pick up one of those RCTimer APM boards a few weeks ago to help support free trade. This was before 3dR lowered the cost of the APM board. The kit complete comes with their clone of the APM, Radio Modem, and GPS. The kit arrived and I noticed many things are alike. Including the silk screening…

Graupner HoTT v4 telemetry protocol for ArduPilot

Graupner is a popular vendor of RC equipment here in Europe. I thought it would be great if we could use they telemetry protocol for ArduPilot. And here it is, HoTT v4 for use in ArduPilot for everyone. It's still fresh code and it's tested with ArduCopter v2.7 on APM2 only, but it works fine since few weeks. There are many possibilities to use HoTT in ArduPilot project, at least…

Showing APM telemetry data on Hitec Aurora’s screen (revisited)

In my previous post I described how to show APM telemetry data on Hitec Auroras screen. The code has now been updated to support APM2 board, though APM1 is also supported. New firmware also adds…

Showing APM telemetry data on Hitec Aurora's screen

Every now and then it's good to pack light and leave the laptop at home and just enjoy flying. Running out of battery at inconvenient time is however a concern of mine. I just recently finished a project to display telemetry data from APM on Aurora's screen. I'm not particularly proud of the technical side…

More Ardustation MAVLink software

I've written my own Ardustation software for talking to the APM using MAVLink. The software is based on my previous version (for APM v1.x), which was in turn based on code written by Michael Smith.

It is capable of editing…

Alternative 868mHz transceiver for Europe

Hey Folks.

While looking around on the interwebs today for alternatives to the Digi Xbee 868 modules for use in Europe, I found this from http://www.rfsolutions.co.uk.  It's specifically the Tiny Pro with external antenna that caught my eye. (The…

iPhone telemetry: a short tutorial

Hello everyone,

After experimenting with tuning the APM, a friend (Roel Offermans) and I decided to implement telemetry. Even though it may seem counterintuitive to use a phone rather than an Xbee, when you already have the phone it saves some money. Another advantage is that it has 'unlimited' range,…

Telemetry App

I went to the first Bay Area FPV fly-in, met some people with really nice setups.  One person was using the iTelemetry app, from Immersion RC.  You can see he didn't quite make it back to the field (ran out of power), which could have been a pretty serious thing since we were flying in a hayfield and the plane was totally…

Ardustation two-way telemetry for Ardupilot Mega

I've got two way telemetry working on my Ardustation, talking to the ArduPilot Mega (APM) using the standard BinComm protocol (GCS_PROTOCOL_STANDARD). So far I can edit PID values and check essential mission following data, along with the standard summary of attitude, location and heartbeat data.

This should make life a lot easier, being able to tweak the plane whilst airborne and seeing what it's up to - without being required to sit down…

Long range R/C control and two-way telemetry

After having had some performance issues with 2.4ghz Xbee modules I just finished up a quick project for long range two-way communication. The system is based on HACCOM HAC-LM96 500mW 433mhz 9600 baud radio modems. Range is 2km (1.2 miles) ground level, so the system should be good for really long range communication when the plane is up in the air.…

RC transmitter with telemetry

Here's a nicely priced Hitec 2.4 GHz transmitter with built-in telemetry. Perhaps an upgrade for our groundstation?

For now, the sensor is only for battery condition but the plan is to have more sensors. Perhaps we can use the data channel as-is..
