Variable Pitch Tricopter Using APM

I have been building a variable pitch tricopter and wanted to share my results so far.

Basically - I chose a tri and not a quad, because the tri geometry is the same as a traditional heli 120 deg swash plate. Since I can't…

ArduCopter: Changing from PI to PID to improve stability

Hi,

I changed the attitude control loop a little bit to achieve more stability. Rate control with a PID(T1) instead of a PI controller. Here I present the necessary changes in the code to do this.

Pro:

  1. Much more attitude stability
  2. Much faster response on disturbances or new setpoints

Con:

  1. You need to tune the control loop again after this change
  2. This change is experimental, it works for me but you do it on…

My DIY Tri

Inspired by this series of DIY videos, and a little wary of over-spending on yet another silly flying machine, I've decided to have a go at building my own Tricopter. The idea is to see just how cheaply I can build the whole thing from start…

OpenPilot CopterControl - Tricopter

Compilation of some on-board footage from the my OpenPilot CC Tricopter. This thing is super stable. I have complete confidence when flying with OpenPilot. Can't believe how simple the setup was. I am using 3-bladed props this time. They are much quieter, but produce less thrust. I had to adjust my trottle curve a bit to get better…

Considerations for an Official Tri-Copter Frame?

I'm starting to see tri-copters becoming more and more popular, so I'm asking the DIYDrones community if there is any interest in making a tri-copter frame that has interchangeable parts with the quad-copter frame.

I've put together a rough draft of a 2D laser cut sketch of a possible…

Position Hold flights at High Altitude with the OptiFlow Tricopter (OFT)

Position Hold flights at High Altitude with the OptiFlow Tricopter (OFT) v1

Successful high altitude (>100m AGL) position hold tests flights with an optical flow sensor on a Tricopter (OFT) UAV.

Tests flights:

1) Fast climb rate to about 100 m AGL in hold position mode with only the throttle command.

2) At 100 m AGL, a 360° turn has been done (wind 14 km/h from SE) with only the yaw command.

3) Fast descend…

TriWiiCopter, a tricopter design using the Wii sensors

I just stumbled into this project of a super-cheap tri/quad copter build ripping apart the Wii controller (gyros) and the Nunchuck (accellerometers): TriWiiCopter

It is based on Arduino Mini. Quite a difference from most other copters that use dedicated sensors and super-powerful boards.

Tricopter 06 - TriWii NK test 1 from Joël Cordier on…

My Failed Mini TriCopter

Here's my failed attempt at a mini tricopter design:

More details and pictures on my RobotBox project page. Any suggestions on getting it to work? I can't seem to find any mini RC helis that have props rotating in a direction opposite the ones on there.
Also, I'm looking for more flying robots to be added to RobotBox. It's a…
