Congratulations Canberra UAV, stunning Outback Challenge win

Ardupilot for the win! APM lead developer Andrew ("Tridge") Tridgell's CanberraUAV team with a 3D Robotics Pixhawk autopilot completed all the challenges and scored an impressive victory in this premier UAV competition. 

Congratulations to Canberra UAV and indeed all the teams that found and rescued Joe. Everybody that qualified deserves a round of applause its a mission just to get to the venue and get your airframe through the strict requirements.

A bottle drop distance of 2.6m that's insane.

I personally believe the Outback Challenge has advanced unmanned aviation at a faster rate than any other competition and we should all be thankful for its existence. 

If they get to keep Joe I hope there will be a series of road trip selfies. He has had quite a wait so I am sure ready to party it up a bit.

Awesome work to all involved I followed the Facebook page closely the whole event and it was excellent to see so much success this year (although the Kingaroy triangle appears to still be in full effect).

I am amused by the fact that in this civilian application of UAV's the teams have had to develop their own ballistics computers (or approaches). I'd be interested to know how reliable the Canberra UAV drop system is from an accuracy perspective. If they are scoring those kind of distances >50% of the time they have a lower CEP then the Hellfire missiles coming off the more unfriendly military drones going around.

Most deserving winner.  The best team at the event by far and totally deserved the win.

Thanks for all the assistance over the last two years - I know we would never had made it without the patient advice of all the CanberraUAV team.

2 meters - what happened did the wind upset the 0m target at the last moment :-)

It's been a lot of fun developing our system, and working closely with so many people in the diydrones community to do it. We'll post some detailed analysis of the flight as we get time.

There was either some ballistics calculation going on, factoring in airspeed & wind, or low altitude using LIDAR.  He keeps his job for another year.
