BOLT: Very small, fast + agile Y6 hexacopter

Once in a while a need a new copter, this time it had to be a very small Y6 copter. It is meant for FPV flying, and that really works very good! It fits through really small holes, and it flies very precisely. It is my first Y6, and I am pretty much convinced by this concept. Ok, well, flight time is an issue.. I get 6:30 min with 1000mAh, but that is still reasonable for such an aerodynamic disaster.

What are the benefits of the 6-motor 'tri copter?'
Well, you can use smaller props on more motors to get a similar amount of lift. So the overall size decreases, but you still have enough power to carry cameras, sensors etc. And this layout is also redundant, you can still fly when you lost a propeller. That happened to me already twice when I was flying through a forest.

Skimming across the ground your altitude control looks very good.

Do you have any kind of active altitude feedback?

No, at the moment that is just the ground effect, which is very prominent for this type of copter. But I am working on a five IR distance sensors that hopefully stabilize the position of the copter with respect to walls and the ground.

That is just freaking COOL!!!  AWESOME!!

Why use a 3 bladed prop, as compared to 2?  Would a two blade not be more efficient?

Go forward William, I guest most of us is like this - doing a lot of things on the same time, we should sleep from time to time, unfortunately ... Looking forward to see the next good  copter and movie - until then you have a small gift in a donation box :-)

Yes it would be more efficient I think, but I don't know of any 2-blade props (CW+CCW) that would fit my motors.

Thank you very much! That will be invested in two gyroscopes for a stand-alone roll/ pitch compensated GoPro mount that I am developing at the moment :-D

Hi William,

Very impressive! The stability is outstanding!

Incidentally, where do you source adxrs 610's? I seems that Sparkun and most other places stopped selling them...

Well I borrowed them from another copter that I didn't use at that moment... Now I buy ADXRS620 breakout boards at watterott.com

Thanks, good tip, had not seen that site before...

It seems that hobbyking stacks a decent selection of 2-blade counter-rotating props (small sizes) latetly - they require a bit of balancing, and you would probably need prop savers to mount them...

Thanks
