I know this isn't news, but please indulge me a moment of pride in the APM dev teams. They have built the world's first "universal autopilot". The same hardware can fly all of the above--every kind of airplane, multicopter and helicopter, along with hardware-in-the-loop simulations--with one click to load new firmware in the Mission Planner. That's just amazing.
And if you want it to autonomously control a rover or boat, that's just a few more clicks.
As far as I know, this has never been done before. Congrats to the whole APM dev team!
(And they're just getting started. You'll be blown away by what's coming...)
Comment by Kevin Hashawan on August 20, 2011 at 10:16pm Chris, still waiting on the PhoneDrone boards to be available :(
It might even be worth taking the time to remove the references to May from the product pages...
Kevin, we did release a limited number in May. We'll be releasing an updated version in a few weeks.

Comment by Johann Van Niekerk on August 21, 2011 at 4:54am Hi Chris
Sorry to be the sour apple here but the new 55 version of the planner is filled with bugs.
1) wording confusion, first step of new setup tab says "reset APM" it should maybe state "APM,ACM" just to stop confusion.
2) When doing radio calibration it moves the Channel that normilly shows up in the CLI as channel 5 to channel 7(assume the mode channel)
3) when moving the sticks which way should the green bar move same direction as the stick or oppisite ? when hitting reverse it reverses the other way round but the green tab still moves in the oppisite direction
4) in the Mode tab it never gives you the confirmation that modes has been set.
5) in the hardware tab it gives you the tick boxes for selecting what you have installed but nowhere does it have the option to set or save the boxes selected/ no confirmation
6) when in the ArduCopter 2 tab you need to click on the frame type first before you hit level (confusing) and when level is hit it says ( 2.0.37+ firmware required ,level failed)
I flew the 39 firmware yesterday still setup with the 54 APM planner release and it flew perfectly but now I cant get the copter setup. even when trying to setup in the CLI it does not want to except the frame type inputted. nor that the compass or sonar is installed.
Should probably add its a 1280 board
Hi Johann, to address your issues
1. The actual hardware is called ArduPilot Mega, so APM is actualy correct, although like you said it could refer to the software.
2. I cant replicate this
3. this is a chicken and egg scenario. i cant reverse the pwm value, because i dont know what it is. the switching sides was purely for refrence.
4. if theres an error on anything it will prompt, just like all other parts of the planner.
5. same as 4, and if there isnt a save box, then its done as you click it.
6. this is a firmware issue at the moment that i have been looking into. (the fault is the apm is rebooting)

Comment by Kirill on August 21, 2011 at 9:17am Dev team is doing great job! That's really amazing!
Comment by avionics on August 21, 2011 at 10:10am It is truely an amazing stuff since about a month ago when i joined this group i have seen so much evolution that is unbleivable which proves true love from the contributors which i admire and appreciate. You have made me to go back to my old books on Maths and control notes and my university books ( I am a graduate of 80's). I have just finished preparing my first Blixer with Ardupilot Mega that i have to find time and take it to our field to test fly it.
a big thank you to all the teams and contributors you all are doing a magnificent job !!!

Comment by CrashingDutchman on August 22, 2011 at 4:54am @Zane: While waiting for a Mac version, would a virtual Windows machine work?
Season Two of the Trust Time Trial (T3) Contest has now begun. The fourth round is an accuracy round for multicopters, which requires contestants to fly a cube. The deadline is April 14th.51 members
