MIT’s Robust Robotics Group is showing off the work they’ve done with a 2M wingspan drone, culminating in a death-defying flight through a parking garage.
The drone is self-contained. It does depend on starting out with a map of its environment, using this in conjunction with a laser rangefinder and inertial sensors to plot its route and adjust as necessary.

Comment by Hawhoo on August 16, 2012 at 6:13pm Wow that is extremely impressive. How long will it take us to catch up? :)
Comment by Carl La France on August 16, 2012 at 6:18pm I think I seen this before it is pretty awesome! was it's path pre programmed ?What would happen if something suddenly jumped out in front of it? could it instantly calculate a way around the new obstacle ?
Comment by Savraj Singh on August 16, 2012 at 8:34pm this is what engineering is all about. impressive stuff.
Comment by Luke Nyhof on August 16, 2012 at 8:39pm Quite impressive, would be even more so if the guidance system did not have a predetermined model of the environment before flight...
Moderators, what's going on?? This is now the fourth time this story has been posted in the past week!
I have to say Christopher the artical is enlightening.

Comment by ionut on August 18, 2012 at 6:36am Chris do you think is that bad to repost something so many times?
You know , not everyone reads the blog hourly and we sometimes may skip some blog posts.
In general, we have a policy against reposts and ask the Moderators to reject dupes. It's just our effort to keep the signal/noise ratio as high as possible in the main "news" channel on the front page. Sometimes dupes slip through, and that's not the end of the world, but four in one week is a bit sloppy for us.
