@IS, Thanks! I was relieved not to have to drag out the old windows laptop and try to get it updated,etc.

The TGY 9X had the throttle potentiometer in a bad way... it looked like the pot itself was cracked.  I was hoping it was the pot board that was just loose, or badly aligned, which might not have been too bad to fix.  I'll know this week how difficult/expensive it is to return.  But I was happy with how easy (about 15 minutes of work) it was to swap a mode 1 to a mode 2.

@Mark Colwell, I think XP will work just fine.  There seems to be no problem at all with attaching the USB to the windows session.  The only problem I had initially was that I didn't have automatic driver install turned on, so I ended up with a device that was looking for the driver disk.  Fortunately I had taken a snapshot prior to trying to install (the WONDERFUL feature of vmware!!), so it was easy to back out to that snapshot, turn on updates, and try again.
