Government Relations

The AMA would like to thank each of our members who has taken the time to respond to the FAA's interpretation of the Special Rule for Model Aircraft, released June 23. This action alert was issued to the entire AMA membership, partnering organizations, and aeromodeling media requesting immediate response to the interpretation. The goal is to notify the FAA through public comment that this rule significantly impacts the entire aeromodeling community and that this community is resolute and committed to protecting the hobby.

After the action alert was sent, members of the AMA leadership team met with the FAA senior management team to discuss our disappointment and requests for modification to the interpretation. Additional information about the requested FAA response will be released through email tomorrow. We ask that you check your spam settings to ensure you are receiving emails from the AMA, and that you share the email with anyone who may have interest in this matter.

Hmm. funny I thought it was the judicial branches job the interpret the rules not the executive.

  • I did get the Email, and it is OK but I think they could have linked to the actual FAA disclosure section rather than straight to the comment bar.

Obviously the AMA only wants you to parrot what they think to the FAA rather than actually having you think for yourself.

    Still not a bad try.

You should note that the FAA has so far reviewed 354 of the 4600 odd comments and are falling further behind every day.

At this rate if they actually review all of the comments it will be a year before they are ready to do anything else.

The FAA has done a remarkably competent job of dealing with piloted aircraft, it is hard to imagine that they have already made such a complete botch of this and seem determined to charge on ahead without taking anything like "reality" into account.

AMA would like to thank the thousands of AMA members and aeromodeling enthusiasts who have responded and made comment to FAA's interpretation of the Special Rule for Model Aircraft. To date we've had over 4,500 comments made and we know many more are developing comments and will be submitting them shortly. Keep in mind the deadline for submitting comments is July 25, 2014.

When deciding if the rule will affect you personally and whether or not you should make comment, consider asking yourself the following:

    •   Are you a modeling enthusiast?
    •   Do you enjoy flying First Person View?
    •   Are you a sponsored pilot, fly in competitive events, or enjoy watching companies
        demonstrate product?
    •   Do you fly within 5 miles of one of the more than 17,000 airports in the US?
    •   Does your club manage its own flying site in a safe and responsible manner?
    •   Do you or your club fly in "controlled airspace"?
    •   Do you know every rule and regulation pertaining to the National Airspace System?

This is a complex issue and many of our members have asked that we provide a simplified explanation, and suggested comments to the Interpretive Rule. Click the link below to find a simplified explanation as to just what this rule means to the average modeler. Also included are AMA's viewpoints and an explanation of the commenting process.

What can I do to help?

The administrative rulemaking notice and comment process is the means by which the FAA can address these concerns and make any definitive changes to the rule. Your comments need to be detailed, meaningful and constructive.

We are asking all of our members and everyone who has an interest in the future of model aviation to participate in this process.Go here to read the simplified explanation of the Interpretive Rule...

    Best,

    Gary

  • BacklashRC,

I have yet to receive the follow up email the AMA said they would send on Wednesday.

  • I have been consistently checking my email and, as of yet, I have not received the email promised by the AMA, detailing the meeting with the FAA.  Has anyone else gotten it?

  • Sorry, but ...

Apology accepted for your strange rant. Try not to do it again.

  • I'd hate to be the guy who "yields the biggest sword." Then the other guy would have the sword.

  • @EngineerX

"wise, honorable law makers, lawyers, lobbyists and those influential types".

Been a very long time since anyone applied either "wise" or "honorable" to that group in the United States anyway.

  • I really hope, in the end, that the FAA doesn't end up singling out FPV (retaliation against looking so incompetent on the Trappy case? - thanks Mr Pinker and thanks to all those flying over populated areas, buildings, monuments)

Historically, deals and agreements are reached by wise, honorable law makers, lawyers, lobbyists and those influential types but always there are "saving face" compromises to make clear who is the boss and who yields the biggest sword.

  • Anyone fear their current flying experiences will be altered or singled out from the FAA by addressing this rule? The media has reported there is fear of retaliation. Anyone else feel this way?

  • just renewed my membership :-)
