First aerial photography

I'm experimenting with a downward-facing point and shoot camera for aerial photography & mapping.

I had a (very turbulent) flight with APM and called an early abort because of high wind. After looking at the footage, it seemed not bad, so I ran it through hypr3d:

Some awesome software they have there. My stitching effort using Microsoft ICE was also quite succesful:

Very encouraging. I just need to get the exposure improved and fly when there's less wind.

Thanks Eagle, just applying what I've learned here.

  • "Microsoft ICE. Works well, but I'm only running 32bit" So thats why my Mac Pro has issues in windows doing this and my laptop has no problem.

I kept wondering why my high power Mac Pro ran into men issues. It has quad core and 8 g ram but i was only able to get 32 it window in it and it only uses 1.9g. I hate that. I wish i could easily get 64 bit in it with out jumping thru hoops. It comes up with an error when you have the 64 bit disc in the drive during start up.

Oh well my laptop does a good job.

  • The higher you get, the more it looks like googlemaps:)

  • That is great then, for high winds...good job. I like the level pics, I was just wondering @ the second cam...i am going to try to capture a 3d look (?) for vegitation for a raptor habitat (nesting) study. Thanks for your responce, your photos are great

Thanks bcrow, but I didn't do any stitching. I selected a range of exposures and dragged and dropped them onto Microsoft ICE. Works well, but I'm only running 32bit, so I'm running into memory problems. It's research software so not the most stable. I flew at 100 meters. I haven't considered another camera, no. The FOV is wide enough to cover to most area. Plus, I'd rather have level pictures.

  • Great shots, and stiching. I have to ask, what was the altitude that you flew and at what speed (area covered / over time). your stiching is so clean. Have you thought about a two camera system? I am looking at a downward looking camera with a second camera set at a 32 degree offset fixed at (approx. 2.5 ft.) from the main camera. both set at the same focal point.....any suggestions?

  • That is really nice.  Do you get near actual altitude measurements in the 3D model.  I am looking at applications that require +/- 1 meter or so clutter altitudes such as the buildings you show.  Nice work!

I'd be interested in finding out how to get a script working with the F stop set as well. Sending PM.
