  • That depends on how their algorithms work. Given the short length of the course, it is plausible the UGV's could operate from vehicle relative coordinates and never utilize GPS / global coordinates in any manner. They would need good odometry and state estimation. Or utilize SLAM during GPS outages to update position. GPS is not the end-all solution and has been proven to be less than optimal for many situations. It is certainly beneficial but not required for autonomous operations.
  • No base stations sux. He thinks DARPA is the same as DARPA Grand Challenge. Hopefully everyone already tried navigating around 2 story buildings with narrow alleys. The UAV's are just going to fly anywhere they want while the rovers lose GPS contact in the alley & run into cars.
  • Someone please get some good high res pictures and video of the event please. Always good for reference material.
  • Cool, I was planning on heading up just to watch. Should be an interesting day.
