Ning, the hosting platform that DIY Drones uses, has just enabled badges! We've been asking for these for a long time so I'm thrilled. What that means is that administrators such as myself can now recognize members for their contributions and award them badges that reflect their skills and accomplishments.
The badges are little image files that show up on the members profile picture, everywhere they appear, so you can see their status at a glance.
We can create any kind of badge, both in word and image, and that reflects the qualities that we value most here. So which ones should we roll out?
Here are some starting suggestions:
- Moderator: one of the members with moderation powers here on the site
- Developer: member of one of the official dev teams)
- Maven: A recognized expert who is particularly helpful to other members. As an example, I've assigned the amazing Marco Robustini to this category, with a placeholder checkbox symbol. (We need better symbols, so I'll need people to submit suggestion badge images here, too)
- T3 participant: Anybody who has entered in a T3 competition.
- N00b Ninja: A member who is very patient and nice to n00bs ;-)
Any other suggestions?

Perhaps a set of badges for active bloggers? I can easily rattle off the names of those who actively post (create new blogs) 1-5, 5-30, 30-100, 100+....
And with that goes a set of badges for active commenters. there are those who you can expect to comment on each blog, and those who only come out for earth moving events.
I think you've identified the trustworthy ones pretty well, and have good badges to set them apart, but those who still participate should get something..

Wouter: Sure! If the UDB team wants to design a badge and nominate some people to get it, I'd be happy to do that.
Is there one for bounty hunters? I think we need one of those too! ;)

not sure if you can use png images with transparency but it you can this one will look a bit better... I think

@Chris, I'm blushing. I think Robert may be right though. The plane is kind of busy. It was really more of a suggestion. Its the tail marking on a Nanchang CJ-6A, which can be found on google images. I'm sure the forum will be able to tweak it a little to make it a DIY Drones original. The Yin-Yang is definitely cool though.
After my last outing on the dev list, the one concerning the artificial horizon in the hud's planner, I want to be downgraded to ultra-n00b! : P
