Actually that is what many of the members are working towards here at this site.

While not meaning to be condescending, you should realize that this level of project requires a significant investment in time and research. (lot of the info is available here)

While this software may be available as part of some commercial UAS products, those systems run from several thousand to several million $.

@RDorsey: For what you are trying to do, it sounds like the Paparazzi project would be more suitable.
You can use XBEE modules to issue commands to the the servos rather than regular RC gear.

THank you guys, this is very informative information. We are considering building a mock console using the remote control functionalilty built into the system itself wireless camera system and all. We really want to give the students the real feel of operating a UAV. I will keep you posted to the progress and include photos as we move forward
