Here it is, the Grand Canyon. This one shows one of the worst encounters with officials regarding our UAV projects to date. Nevertheless, it's one of the most beautiful places to fly at. To stay out of trouble, fly into the Grand Canyon from outside the National Park fences.

Confiscated your SD cards? Umm, that's illegal. The police (or any LEO) do not have the power to deprive you of private property without due process...

Yes I know Andreas. We also got a ticket for a law we did not break. We are currently searching for a lawyer to help us press charges, but it's not easy especially if you're a broke student who made that trip on his last dime :)

That doesn't sound legal.  I could see them asking you to stop, but taking your property?  Geez..

Hmm.. i am going there next week and was planning on bringing the quad.  I guess I will be careful.  Wasn't planning on running over the canyon anyway because something that big and deep is bound to be a magnet for my quad!

Wow this is brief but you really need to turn on full 1080 HD to see how beautiful this place is.

Nice video as usual, really sad that you lost your SD cards... he could have confiscated the planes and gear as well while at it!   Hope you fight it back and get them back... although they will probably wipe them clean just to piss you.

What's next Trappy? are we done on the US tour?

hehe no that's 12/13. the grand finale is next ... I think if you pin out the locations we've filmed so far this one will be very obvious. it's going to be a very celebrational video. after that we'll be doing thailand.

trappy: don't bother with charges - it will be a massive waste of time. The cops don't care, they don't pay, we all do in our taxes. They wont get punished for something like this anyway. I'd suggest simply filing a written complaint with the Park Service. You should also, formally, ask for the return of your property or compensation.  A written demand sometimes works wonders. In any case, you want to document this incident. If there is ever an "audit", they see a pattern of behavior and can't say it is a "one off".

Finally, send me a PM with a paypal address or a mailing address. I'd like to send you replacement SD cards or a tip for your lovely video, and so that I can have the satisfaction of knowing the fuzz did not win ;-) I can't stand authoritarian bullies, especially ones that break the laws they are supposed to uphold.

thanks Andreas, I'm fine we get SD cards for free. It's the content that is worth a lot to us - not $ but in sentimental value. that morning flight was the most jaw-dropping flight I have done in my entire life. and I've done some very cool flights :)

the reason we are pressing charges is simply for fun. it costs me 5 mins to make a well-placed phone call, and it will cost the cops time, the NPS will need to make a statement, etc. etc. etc. I have cost them at least 50-60 hours already just by making random phone calls, writing written complaints to multiple addresses all over Arizona. A lot of my friends have done the same. This guy has never received so much sh*t for one action in his entire life, I'm very sure of that. Filing charges will be the icing on the cake. Who knows, maybe he gets a fine ... maybe he doesn't. I don't really care.

oh on the AZ side?

That's where Arpaio's turf is isn't it? The most lawless law department in the country. They are completely out of control. You're lucky they didn't shoot you for littering.

yeah AZ side. pretty much my experience, yes. they admitted I didn't break any rules. "Come here and defend it" was what they said, knowing very well I live on the other side of the planet :)
