James, I think it's done to make the arms more compact without the need to leave clearance between adjacent props.

Also wouldn't it be more efficient? all air coming off a prop doesn't just necessarily go straight down centrifugal force would throw air off the props tip into the path of a adjacent prop  on the same plane doing the same thing if it was to close? lowering it's efficiency?
