X8 Flying wing now available from Hobbyking

This flying wing has been around for a while, but now it is also available from Hobbyking. The X8 is made from EPO and with spars in the wing and canopy, this aircraft is virtually indestructable. With a wingspan of 2120mm (about 83.5 inch) this wing is capable of carrying some pretty nice gear for FPV or UAV's. It should be able to carry 1-1.5kg in extra weight. There is a camera mount in the nose and a forward oblique mount for GoPro camera's.

Even though this plane is big, it is easy to transport it. Both the wing panels and the vertical stabilisers are bolt on. The canopy is hold on by magnets. There is a spar molded into each wing panel.

To complete this aircraft, the following items are suggested:

  • 400 - 800 watt motor (depending on your AUW)
  • Propellor: 12x6 - 13x8 (foldable?)
  • Battery, depending on motor size: 4S/3000mAh - 6S/5000mAh
  • Speed controller: 40 - 70 Amps

Available from Hobbyking now for US$ 164.95: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__27132__Skywalker_X_8_FPV...

Aircraft is virtually indestructable??? I have had few EPO planes and they will break actually quite easily. I have one plane made out of Flexipor and it has like 10 times better crash worthiness compared to EPO.

I think they are talking about in relation to balsa planes.  Still it is good to see the x-8 a few dollars cheaper.  conventionally they cost about 240$ to get from BEV-RC.  One thing people have to realise about these things is that they are huge.  You need fold down seats in a car to own one.

With propeller behind I was wondering what would be the best way to launch it. Any thoughts ?

The launch is just like any other tail-rotor flying wing. Throw first, then start the motor. Never had problems with that kind of method.

May be learn fly first?

Vladimir: You can't teach autopilot to fly. If for example eprom or gps fails then it fails. And when the autopilot fails the plane hits to ground and that is when you wish to have a durable frame material.

Sure...

I flew for years on different Paparazzi boards and have one ( 1 ) fails.

But I believe, different tuning procedures exist.

It would be very nice option to have X8-wing made of Flexipor (EPP). Maybe the surfaces wouldn't be as smooth as the EPO version has  but the EPP material would be very durable and not that sensitive to sharp objects and things like that. When u push EPO for example with wooden stick the dent remains but in EPP there will not be any dent cause the material tends to come to the original shape. EPP is a bit floppier but I think much more durable. I've heard that there is not that much EPP planes because the material tends to expand after taken out from the mold, so usually EPP planes are cnc or wire cutted from EPP blocks. Here is one EPP plane:

@Dutchman:

Hmmm... I get $164,95 as a price from HK, not $177,19. Does HK make different prices for different people or is it more expensive when we use your affiliate ID?

@Veikko:

The first versions were made from EPP and IIRC there was a problem with less durability. If you have a dent in an EPO plane, a little heat should help that.

I believe the original batch of X-8's were made of EPP.  Most people seemed like they were very unhappy about this.  If you contact bev-rc you might be able to find an EPP model in stock.  I know no one seemed to want one in that material.
