Can 3DR radios be used to build a gps tracker?

I have a few Mediatek gps modules that I am not using and I would like to build a small gps tracker (not to use on a UAV but something else). The gps trackers that use radios like Garmin dog trackers cost quite a bit. Can I just connect the serial port wires of a gps module directly to a 3DR radio and then write some software that could receive the coordinates on a computer ground station?

  • cool. I will try it. The software might require quite a bit of programming work to get a moving map, but hopefully I can modify the APM code to at least get it to display the gps coordinates

  • Yes, this will work. Of course with correct UART baudrate etc.
