Hexa moves sideways, help please :)

I calibrated the ESCs, calibrated ACC, and also I calibrated Mag, and I don't know what else to do... my hexacopter moves sideways (to the left) when I start it, and I have to land it right away because it will probably flip if I push the throttle higher.Can you guys give me some pointers on what to check?Here is a link to the thread I had when I purchased the parts (see last posts for final parts I got):http://www.diydrones.com/forum/topics/building-my-first-hexacopter-anything-missingBut in short, it's a H550, NTM 28-26A 1200kv motors, TURNIGY Plush 30amp ESCs, MultiWii PRO Flight Controller, Turnigy 5000mAh 4S 40C Lipo, Turnigy 9X Transmitter

  • Hi Taylor,

    I don't remember the exact problem I had when I posted this thread, but I think I fixed it by disabling the auto level.

    I did not mention when I first started this thread that I enabled auto level at the same time with arm, and at that time I did not know how to trim. After I disabled auto level, I was able to fly it. But only recently I realized that the problem with moving sideways is because of the auto level, and only recently I figured out how to trim the level to make it horizontal. I had many problems with my MultiWii, with barometer, with GPS, PIDs, auto level... basically everything! so all this time I was flying in acrobatic mode, and with default PIDs. Took me a long time to learn how to control it, and I still did not learn how to fly it when it's pointing in any other direction than in front. I had a really bad crash when I turned it 180 degree, because all the controls got reversed! and since I was flying in acro mode, there is no 45 degree angle limit, so I flipped it upside down, and in less then 1 second, it.... ammm.... landed! I was actually lucky because I only had to replace some props, 1 motor, and straighten some of the pins on the FC.

    About a month ago I built a small H-quad from wood, with spare parts from my Hexa, and I used a Naze32 Acro flight controller. I learned a few new things with it, including how to calibrate the auto level :) So now I want to give another try to the auto level on my F550 with MultiWii.

    But... even though I was not able to get to work most of the nice features, I got good enough to fly my F550 in acro mode, I gained some confidence and I attached the Tarot gimbal to it, and made a video like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIYogu0J16g (see the details for more info on the video)
  • I figured out what is the problem, but I could not figure out how to fix it.

    It's the transmitter!!

    I figured it out when I reversed the "AIL" in the transmitter, then the hexa started going to the right instead of the left like before. Then I tried many different settings, and some seemed to affect the behavior of the hexacopter, but I still could not get it right...

    I don't know how to properly configure the Turnigy 9X Transmitter!  I goggled it, I watched videos... so far, I could not get it to fly straight up...

    Maybe I need a fresh mind, tomorrow I will fiddle with the transmitter settings again.

    • Did you fix the problem Michael? I had a similar thing with a KK V1 board, gave up and bought a KK2.1.5 which seems to be working. It's not trim on the the Tx was it? Will it definitely flip, ie. have you tried holding it or moving it around on a table to see if the correct motors respond, attempting to level itself?

  • The drone is tilted down on the left side, and it drifts to the left. I did not take it off the ground so much to see it flip, but I assume it will...

    I double checked to rotation of the motors, and I am sure it is correct, also the propellers are correct, I checked this so many times, I lost count!

    I calibrated the ESCs by connecting each one to the receiver (wait for the beeps, etc...), and that did not work, same result... I also calibrated all the ESCs at the same time using the MultiWii setting for calibrating (ESC_CALIB_CANNOT_FLY), that gives the same result...

    I rotated motors... same result...

    Don't know what to check anymore
  • So it drifts sideways or it starts to flip over if you apply more throttle?  If it is the later, I have had the same issue caused by props on incorrectly, motors spinning the wrong way, and a bad gyro thinking it was upside down.  I would look at those first and see if perhaps it clears it up.

  • I tried to switch the left motor with the right, but it still moves sideways to the left, so this means the problem is not the motors...
